During the Xbox Developer Direct 2024, Avowed was one of the titles that could showcase a new gameplay trailer. The focus of the video was not only on the different biomes and the decision-making options in quests but also on the combat system. The material shown has been well received by players.
What makes the combat system special? In Avowed, it will be possible to quickly switch between melee and ranged weapons as well as special abilities. The video shows that the character can switch between all kinds of weapon types at the push of a button.
The combat system is not intended to be simple “hack and slash”, but rather require real-time decisions from the player. Depending on the type of enemy and personal preferences, a different weapon combination is necessary.
This is expressed in the freedom that players can design their loadout freely. The following combinations are possible, for example:
- Revolver and shield
- Wand and sword
- 2 revolvers
- 2 wands
This way, players would have the opportunity to express their own play style. They could determine how they react in different situations through seamless weapon switching, according to Obsidian Entertainment.

What decision-making freedoms do I have? As in The Outer Worlds, it is possible to determine the outcome of quests. At certain points, we receive different options in dialogues, leading to a different course of events.
The video shows an NPC who describes a situation to us. In this case, players can decide whether to believe him and hand over an item, or to accuse him of lying. This would then lead to a fight with the NPC.
What do the biomes look like? In Avowed, there will be different landscapes. The trailer shows deserts, rocky landscapes, and forests. The luminescent mushrooms and strange plants give the continent an alien look.
When will the game be released? Avowed is expected to be released sometime in autumn 2024. A precise date is still pending.
What do players say about it? In the comments, there are many fans who have positive words for the gameplay material. Many of the commenters are looking forward to trying out the combat style where players use two wands.
