The creator of PUBG has created a new game that he expects many players will hate. But it helps him develop a huge MMO.
Who is it about?
- Brendan Greene was the lead developer for PUBG. Years earlier, he had already developed a “Battle Royale” mod for DayZ and was involved in the creation of “H1Z1: King of the Hill.”
- PUBG is still one of the most played games on Steam and had an average of 307,000 players on the platform in January 2025
- Greene has significantly influenced gaming as we know it today, as “Battle Royale” shooters like Fortnite, CoD Warzone, and Apex Legends have become indispensable.
- Today, Greene has his own development studio, PlayerUnknown Productions.
A survival game where the weather is your greatest enemy
What kind of game is it? Greene’s latest game is called Prologue: Go Wayback! and is a survival game set in a large, procedurally generated open world. This world is designed to change completely with each run.
The worlds of Prologue are to be created by a system that learns machine-wise and is trained on satellite data and real terrain information.
Prologue is a single-player game. Players have the task of reaching a remote weather station, but they must be mindful of various dangers that can quickly cost them their lives – such as the possibility of freezing or starving.
There are reportedly no NPC enemies like zombies or wild animals. The big, unpredictable enemy is the weather. In an interview with the English-speaking magazine PCGamer, Greene says the game is meant to be very tough. Death and failure are part of the gameplay, which is why he expects many players will hate it.
Test for an important system
What is the goal behind the game? Prologue: Go Wayback! is just the starting point for Greene’s ambitious plans. It is primarily intended to help in the development of two much larger games.
After Prologue, a second game is to follow, which is said to be millions of square kilometers large and will accommodate millions of players – similar to Rust, but much larger.
If that works, a third project called Artemis will be the next goal. This is a kind of metaverse where players can create their own worlds and travel between them. Greene calls it a 3D version of the internet. However, that is expected to be 10-15 years away.
To achieve these two ambitious projects, the machine system for creating maps needs to learn further – they will accomplish this through Prologue and the feedback from players.
It could take many years before Project Artemis is released. If you want to know which MMOs you can already play in 2025, MeinMMO editor Karsten has created an overview for you: New MMOs and multiplayer games 2025: Look forward to these releases
