In Destiny 2, many Guardians pass the time with activities like Gambit or Strikes. Occasionally, they might also engage in a Raid. However, some Guardians do not settle for just that and delve deeper into the game’s matters. We at MeinMMO show you what players do to calculate Bungie’s secret drop chances.
What experiment took place? A Guardian named “LegionlessOnYT” took on the task of clearing every lost sector of Destiny 2 100 times. In total, that amounted to 1,600 runs that lasted 93 hours, as he elaborated in detail on reddit.
Many of you might think about how crazy one must be to endure something so exhausting. Indeed, it is crazy, but the results and insights drawn from it were definitely worth it.
As crazy as it sounds, no one would voluntarily conduct such an experiment. Nonetheless, the sacrifice of time gives us insights about whether there’s a certain system behind it or if everything relies solely on RNG.
Guardians want to understand the systems behind the exotic drop rate
Why all the effort? You probably know it – A new season has begun, and now you want to farm the new exotics from the forgotten sectors. For several seasons now, the new exo armors have only been waiting there – and that isn’t guaranteed either.
Sector after sector, you try to finally get the new exotic, and eventually, you give up because after 15 runs, that damned exotic still hasn’t dropped. In the best case, you receive an old exo, where even the stats are poorly distributed.
Precisely for this reason, a Guardian took on the task of finding out what the drop rate actually is in the legendary sectors.
What was discovered? After 1,600 runs, a total of 393 exotics dropped. The Guardian comes up with a chance of 24.56%. One might think that after every fourth run, an exo should drop, but that is not the case.
Since every Guardian’s “luck” varies, it might be possible that an exotic appears only after the 20th run, but then drops on the 21st and 22nd run as well. It is a statistic – no guarantee. Moreover, the Guardian lists the best sectors for farming.
Farm these lost sectors: The lost sectors were listed based on effort and ease:
- Veles Labyrinth (Cosmodrome)
- Star Light Chamber (Dreaming City)
- The Quarry (EDZ)
- Excavation Site XII (EDZ)
- Aphel’s Rest (Dreaming City)
- The Empty Tank (Shatterback Point)
- Hidden Void (Europa)
- Coast of Lost Wishes (Dreaming City)
- Scavenger’s Den (EDZ)
- Corruption (Europa)
- Exodus Garden (Cosmodrome)
- Bunker E15 (Europa)
- K1 Communion (Moon)
- K1 Crew Quarters (Moon)
- K1 Logistics (Moon)
- K1 Revelation (Moon)
You notice that all Moon sectors are at the end of the list. This is likely due to the fact that these are the hardest but also the most time-intensive sectors of all. Therefore, the expert advises against them and rather points to the sectors from the EDZ and the Cosmodrome.

Can you rely on it? That is entirely up to you. However, it appears that the drop rate is still based on luck. The experiment, conducted by the diligent Guardian, deserves respect nonetheless. Through his sacrifice, we could confirm that in the world of Destiny 2, much is based on luck, and you still have to pray to the RNG god to be blessed.
