The voice actor of Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2 was sent back to the studio. The lines with his horse sounded too erotic.
Who is the voice actor? Roger Clark voices the cowboy Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2, whom you play during the story. He is popular in the community and often appears in photos or videos with fans.
Why did he have to re-record lines? As a voice actor, Roger Clark has to record many dialogues with other gang members. Conversations with Dutch, calls for Lenny, or fights with other characters are part of it.
But in Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur also talks to his horse. Arthur even cries when his beloved horse dies.
In RDR 2, depending on the bonding with the horse, there are various lines that Roger Clark recorded. And his deep, breathy, masculine voice was initially a bit too intimate in relation to a horse.
Arthur spoke about the situation at MomoCon:
Much of what has to do with horses was voice acting. I believe I spent about 2 days in the recording booth doing that. It was about whether Arthur’s horse is a mare or a stallion.
Then there are different dialogues depending on whether you have a level 4 bond or a level 1 bond. You’re not quite so affectionate, etc.
So we did that. A few weeks later, I came back and one of our wonderful assistant directors, Gethin Aldous, came to me and said:
‘Roger, we need to re-record those horse lines.’
I asked: ‘Why?’
And he said: ‘Well … they’re a bit too intimate. It doesn’t sound like you’re talking to a horse.’
I asked: ‘What do you mean?’
Then the staff member played the lines again and Clark agreed that they needed to be recorded differently. How it sounded, you can hear in the following video:
