Could a Samurai series become the new Game of Thrones? – Shogun is already being praised by critics

A new series with a historical setting called Shōgun is set to debut in just a few days, promising epic battles and political intrigue. The series has many similarities to Game of Thrones and has received high praise in initial reviews.

What is Shōgun about? The series throws you into the time of feudal Japan and revolves around John Blackthorne, the captain of a Dutch ship who ends up in Japan. There, he encounters influential figures and becomes embroiled in their political intrigues.

Like Game of Thrones, Shōgun is based on a book, specifically the best-selling novel of the same name by James Clavell.

What are critics saying so far? On Rotten Tomatoes, the series currently holds a perfect score of 100% on the Tomatometer from 22 reviews (as of February 23, 2024).

Critics praise the upcoming series and compare it to the HBO hit Game of Thrones. For instance, gamesradar concludes in their review: “Watch out, Game of Thrones, it’s [Shogun] coming to claim your throne…”

Particularly positive reviews of Shōgun highlight the action and fight scenes, noting that the series is not shy about brutality and “blood fountains.”

Additionally, the acting performances of the cast, the gripping plot with political intrigues, and the fantastic historical setting reportedly impress reviewers and even make it a “strong contender for the best new series of 2024.”

Where and when can you watch Shōgun? The samurai series will premiere on Disney+ on February 27, 2024.

Initially, two episodes will be released there – after that, new episodes will come to the platform every Tuesday, on a weekly basis. The series will consist of a total of 10 episodes, each with a runtime of one hour.
