Conan O’Brien macht Werbung für Lineage 2 Revolution, hat keine Ahnung

The Korean company Netmarble wants to bring its mobile MMORPG Lineage 2 Revolution to Europe and North America at all costs. They have enlisted the Clueless Gamer, Conan O’Brien, as their ambassador. He announced the release date for Lineage 2 Revolution at TwitchCon.

For months, it has been known that the Korean game company Netmarble will make a huge push to North America and Europe. The war chest is well-filled, and Netmarble spares no expense or effort to secure a strong market entry in the West. After all, the gaming market for smartphones is huge – everyone has one of those devices. There is real money to be made.

Lineage is to Asia what WoW is to the West

Netmarble has already been successful in the West with games like Marvel Future Fight, but with “Lineage 2 Revolution” they have a mobile MMORPG in reserve that is set to usher in a new era in smartphone gaming. This has already been achieved in Asia.

Lineage is a massive brand name in South Korea. There, for decades, Lineage has been what “WoW” is in the West. With Lineage 2 Revolution, the franchise has conquered mobile devices in Korea and large parts of Asia. The big hype around Lineage 2 Revolution started back in early 2017.

The catch is that Lineage 2 Revolution is essentially a “real PC MMORPG” for mobile devices with PvP and everything that comes with it.

For months, people have been waiting for the game to come to Europe and the USA. Now at TwitchCon 2017, it made a big appearance, and the release date was announced.

Hearthstone streamers promote Lineage 2 Revolution

In a 50-minute presentation, Netmarble introduced the game. They have recruited a number of well-known streamers as ambassadors who speak positively about Lineage 2 Revolution.

You can see streamers known primarily from Hearthstone, like Kripparian, Trump, DisguisedToast, or Reynad – but also other prominent faces from Twitch.

You can tell how much money is behind the project over the course of the presentation. Netmarble has secured US talk show star Conan O’Brien as the main ambassador for Lineage 2 Revolution.

O’Brien has established a good reputation as an incompetent but humorous gamer in his talk show as the “Clueless Gamer” and showcases the advantages of Lineage 2 Revolution in a longer segment.

You can tell that O’Brien maintains an ironic distance from gaming and has no idea about the game itself. He simply reads off all the features – he doesn’t know what the abbreviations and buzzwords mean and doesn’t even bother to pretend that he does. He lets his co-host, Day 9, explain the nuances, of whose nickname O’Brien finds endlessly amusing: “Sounds like someone in a drug rehab program.”

O’Brien ironically notes that he promotes the game wholeheartedly because he believes teenagers should spend more time on their smartphones. He claims to have caused 7 accidents on the way to the show because he was so engrossed in Lineage 2 Revolution. Besides, he is a god in Korea.

Again and again, Conan O’Brien hints during the presentation that he has absolutely no idea what he is reading, while he claims “it just came to his mind.”
