Steel is a must for every barbarian in Conan Exiles. But how do you get the coveted bars of this precious metal? How do you craft stronger equipment? Here you will find out!
“You must unravel the secret of steel!”, advises Conan’s father in the legendary first barbarian film with Arnold Schwarzenegger to his son. Those who thought back then: “Pff, how hard can that be? It’s just steel!”, can now try in the survival MMO Conan Exiles whether they can unveil the secret of steel and craft steel bars for their weapons.
In the beginning was iron
However, steel is not exactly easy to obtain, and even if you know how to produce the precious metal, you need tons of materials before you hold shiny steel bars in your hands. But one step at a time.
If you want steel, you first need iron. You can find this in “iron stones”, which sometimes come out of regular rocks. However, this meager yield is never enough for your later needs, so you unfortunately have to climb up to higher mountain regions.
Because there you will find pure iron deposits as well as coal (useful as fuel during the later smelting). But beware, there are some wild animals lurking up there, and the valuable iron is, as experience shows, happily mined by all players on the server. If your PvP option is on, you should proceed carefully or form a mining and protection community with other players.
Then throw the iron ore as well as wood or coal into the furnace, and two iron stones will produce one iron bar.
The riddle of steel lies in the trees
If you want to make steel from iron, you need another resource called steel fire. You obtain this from tar and sulfur.
Sulfur can be found in small quantities in caves and in larger numbers in the great sulfur pit in the northwest. However, some dangerous opponents are also lurking there, so be careful. Sulfur itself is mined with the pickaxe from sulfur stalagmites.
Tar is more complicated to obtain. It is actually a byproduct of tanning hides from bark. Bark is easy to obtain if you know how. To gather bark, you simply have to hit a tree with the pick instead of the axe; then you get the bark.
From two pieces of tar and sulfur, you can produce the coveted “steel fire” in the “fire bowl cauldron”. This, in turn, results in one steel bar with 5 (!) iron bars. So you should produce a good amount of iron in advance if you want to stock up on steel. Steel, in turn, is used for strong tier-3 building parts and weapons with which you can effectively destroy such buildings.
