The developers of Conan Exiles have announced a new feature: Mounts. These are meant to make traveling a bit more pleasant, but also to introduce new aspects. Mounts are something that fans have been waiting for a long time, and it has been announced for a long time now.
What is this feature? Conan Exiles is finally getting mounts. With these, you will be able to ride faster through the desert or other biomes. There is even supposed to be a completely new mounted combat system, though further information is still lacking.
So far, only horses have been presented as types of mounts in a trailer. Whether you will have to tame and breed them like animal companions is also still unknown, but it is probably likely due to the already existing system.
When will the mounts be released? The mount update is set to be released as a free patch in December 2019. Since nothing more specific has been communicated, we assume that the date applies simultaneously for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
How you can customize mounts: Along with the free mount update, Conan Exiles will also receive the 9th DLC “Riders of Hyboria.” This will include optional cosmetics as usual, and it will cost €9.99.
In addition to the usual cosmetics like weapon and armor skins, new mounts are also expected to be introduced here. With companions, it was possible to breed animals in special styles with special food from DLC packs. Presumably, it will work similarly with mounts.
Long wait for the mounts
Fans have been waiting this long: Already in March 2017, during the early access phase of the game, mounts were introduced in a roadmap for Conan Exiles. They were supposed to be released sometime during that year.
However, this was continuously delayed until the feature was hardly addressed at all anymore. Many players have continuously wished for mounts – also here on MeinMMO:
The game needs mounts. Conan Exiles has a rather limited content and features. You must survive, gather, build, and then there are dungeons and PvP. But beyond that, there isn’t much to do, so it would be cool to introduce a taming system and more mounts.
Huge spiders or rhinoceroses that you first have to track down and defeat or something like that. That would be really cool and would also bring more variety to the gameplay. Plus, the world is pretty big, and running around can get quite annoying at times.

Why did it take so long? After mounts were announced and never came, Conan Exiles released an update with animal companions shortly after release. Many fans assumed that these were meant to be a replacement for mounts.
After all, companions can carry a number of items and serve a similar purpose: you can carry more and still travel quickly (even though some slaves could also do that).
Additionally, players can build a mapping room in Conan Exiles and teleport on the map. At least this reduces travel time for advanced players. Mounts somehow became something that you want to have but no longer urgently need.
Is there more to come? In the original plans, there was also talk of large animals like rhinoceroses that can have buildings placed on them. At the moment, they only exist as pure companions and not as mounts.
However, we currently only know for sure that mounts will appear for movement and combat. Everything else is still speculation.
