In the latest update for the survival MMO Conan Exiles, you can retreat from the battles in the desert and the north and become a farmer instead. We show you how!
Plants have a very special function in Conan Exiles. They not only serve as food but are also an essential component for brews, healing potions, dyes, and other alchemical recipes. However, they are most important for construction, in the form of plant fibers for ropes.
Until now, players had to painstakingly collect plants at their locations and wait for them to reappear. It often happened that on densely populated servers, a clan had claimed a position around aloe plants and yellow lotus.
In the new update 33, you can now grow your own plants. Every plant that does not grow underwater can be planted and harvested. All you need is level 18, the talent “Landmann”, and a few ingredients.

From Outcast to Farmer
When you reach level 18, you can find the talent “Landmann” in the “Survival” tab in your talents. Landmann only costs one talent point and requires no prior knowledge, so you can freely become a farmer.
With this talent, you will learn the two recipes “Simple Plant Trough” and “Compost Heap”. Both can be easily crafted and do not require any workbenches – everything works from the inventory and without advanced resources.
- Simple Plant Trough: 20 wood, 5 twine (equivalent to 15 plant fibers)
- Compost Heap: 20 wood
Later upgrade levels allow you to build regular plant troughs and improved plant troughs with larger volumes.
Basically, you have everything you need to set up your own garden and supply your clan – or yourself – with plants. All you need are the seeds of the plants you want to grow and compost. You can often find the seeds among the plants themselves – compost is a bit more complicated.
Making Compost – With Patience to Dirt
Compost is an excellent recipe that allows you to get rid of two items that have clogged many chests: spoiled meat and bones. However, making compost requires many resources and time.
To obtain one unit of compost, you need to put the following items into the compost heap:
- 4 x Bone Meal
- 5 x Plant Fibers
- 2 x Spoiled Meat
- 4 minutes per unit
With the compost obtained, you can fertilize a plant seed in the plant troughs and promote its growth. Just place the seeds together with the compost in the trough and wait. However, for higher-tier plants like the yellow lotus, you need effective compost:
- 2 x Compost
- 2 x Blood
- 2 x Raw Ash
- 4 minutes per unit
You obtain blood from humans or from the brothel of Derketo, raw ash from obsidian deposits in volcanic areas. Therefore, growing rarer plants is reserved for higher-level characters.
How to Make Compost Even Easier
Since the new feature for capturing and taming animals, it is even easier to make compost in Conan Exiles.
What do I need for this? Basically, a simple enclosure with a single animal in it is enough. This will produce manure over time with the right feeding.
You can find out what food the animal needs in its inventory. As long as it is in the enclosure and has something to eat, it will produce the resource. The more animals are in the enclosure, the more manure there will be. You can then use this to produce compost in the compost heap:
For regular compost:
- 5 x Plant Fibers
- 10 x Manure
For effective compost:
- 2 x Compost
- 10 x Manure
- 2 x Raw Ash
What You Need Elsewhere
In addition to the agricultural structures, you need a millstone. You can either have a friend build it for you or learn the recipe yourself:
Millstone
- Available from level 17 in the “Survival” tab
- Costs 4 talent points
- Construction: 50 stones and 10 branches, from the inventory
You need the millstone to make bone meal. You obtain this by putting bones, teeth, tusks, or horns into the millstone. So go hunting, slay animals, and butcher them with the pickaxe or axe – this will yield you meat (which you must let spoil) and bones.
Special Tip: Chitin can also be ground into bone dust! If you find spiders or scorpions, just use a skinning knife on their corpses. This way, you can quickly obtain a lot of chitin for bone meal!
With these recipes, you now have everything you need to establish your own plant farm!
