Yes, it happened. I have relapsed again. No, I am not talking about my secret passion for searching the internet for new succubus pictures or my love for chili chocolate. The horror has a much worse name: World of Warcraft. What I experienced in the last week, you will read in a few days, but today I am dealing with one of the negative aspects: the perpetual naysayers, those who always complain even though it is not Wednesday.
“Everything was better back then!”
I am sure everyone has heard that saying at least once, regardless of whether in the family, at school, with friends, or on television. By the Nether, how much this saying annoys me!
These people are particularly terrible in MMORPGs, where WoW, with its nearly 10 years of runtime, is simply a prime example. If you take the fun to place yourself in a capital city to follow the chat channels there, you will likely find a discussion every 5 minutes about the oh-so-wonderful past. “The game was still challenging back then,” “they actually put effort into raids back then,” “the RP back then was simply better.”
I simply can’t hear it anymore. If all that people still like about the game seems to be the opportunity to complain, why do they even play? Why do I still recognize the names of people who complained 5 years ago that it “will never be as good as Classic”? Don’t these people – forgive me the blunt expression – have other hobbies?
I agree that many things were different back then. But different is not always better. Can someone really tell me in hindsight that the developers of such a successful game messed everything up and are still successful?
I am curious about someone who will take a stand for this. But since we humans all have the same quirk of glorifying the past, unfortunately, I cannot escape such brain acrobats. “Everything was better back then, but all the new games are just not like WoW is now.” Aha. Do me a favor and uninstall yourself, thanks.
I think I have made my point clear; if not, I will conclude with the words of one of my favorite cabaret artists, Jochen Malmsheimer: “Nothing was better back then. Many things were just earlier.”
Or to put it in my words: The only thing that was better in WoW back then is the fact that no one could say that everything was better back then.
