Call of Duty: Warzone takes another step against cheaters. They are introducing 2-factor authentication on PC to enhance security.
Infinity Ward announced: The developers state on Twitter that they have implemented a security update, requiring every new Warzone player on PC to go through 2-factor authentication.
This aims to provide even more security for players and also affects cheaters, as they cannot quickly create a new account if they have been banned without providing a new phone number for SMS verification.
The Cheater Update Aims to Provide More Security
What is 2FA? With this method, data is secured globally. One must choose two different methods to secure the data. A good example is a bank card and the PIN when withdrawing cash. With only one of the two, you cannot access your money.
This method is already being used by other shooters such as Fortnite or PUBG. This protects your account from hackers and prevents loss of data.
What does this do against cheaters? So far, over 70,000 cheaters have been banned from Warzone. Many of them simply create a new account and continue to cheat.
With 2-factor authentication, however, this is significantly harder, as you always need to approve with a second device, such as a mobile phone, and cannot simply create a new account.
If someone has already linked and secured an account with two devices and then loses it due to a ban, they cannot just create a new account. They will need to purchase a new SIM card to link it to the new Warzone account.
The effort is thus significantly higher, and many cheaters may quickly lose interest.
For which platforms does this apply? The security update currently only applies to new PC players. Other platforms do not need to register via 2FA.
However, most cheaters are generally found on PC, as it is the easiest platform to download cheating software.
How are players reacting to this? On reddit, this tweet is met with great enthusiasm. Many players are happy that Infinity Ward is finally taking another step against cheaters.
Many are also enjoying the complaints of the cheaters. As noted by “XRey360” on reddit: “I have read the cheating forums, and oh man, so many posts are popping up crying about how to circumvent the phone verification step when creating a new account after the last one was banned.”
Overall, this direction from Infinity Ward is well received. Recently, the developers pitted cheaters against each other in lobbies so that they do not disturb fair players while gaming.
