Call of Duty: Warzone will focus on events like Fortnite and also advance the story running in the background. This hidden story apparently continues with the new update 1.20. Players are increasingly encountering mysterious access cards. Are they the solution to the great bunker mystery?
New update is here: On April 29, CoD: Warzone and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare received the new major update 1.20. This brought several changes to the game, including some not listed in the patch notes.
There are now, among other things, mysterious red access cards with which players have not yet been able to do anything. However, data miners have discovered something exciting in the new game data: The mysterious bunkers might soon open.
Warzone and story? Recently, the developers at Infinity Ward announced that Warzone will focus on events like those in Fortnite. This aims to advance the story and develop the world and characters of the battle royale.
They want to pursue the approach of storytelling through the game that Fortnite has successfully used since 2018:
- Things should just happen, without much explanation
- These “things” should lead to changes, events, or occurrences
- In doing so, CoD wants to be “more mature and darker” than Fortnite.
And after the recent update, it looks like that is exactly what is happening.
Recently, the mysterious bunkers on the CoD: Warzone map have sparked debates. Many players are anticipating an exciting development. So far, the bunkers are not accessible. Now, mysterious access cards have come into play. How is everything connected? What might we expect at Warzone soon?
Mysterious access cards are in the game: Since the last update, players have occasionally stumbled upon a new item – the red access card.
As for what it is for, so far it is unknown. Nothing has yet been discovered that shows what the card does or where it can be used. However, many assume it is directly related to the bunkers – even though it probably won’t directly open the protective structures.

What is the deal with the bunkers in Warzone? Bunkers are the big mystery of Call of Duty: Warzone – and apparently also part of the background story. Numerous of these protective structures are scattered across the battle royale map but remain inaccessible thus far (at least normally).
Players have been speculating for a while about what these bunkers are, whether and how to get inside, and what we might find in them. Some have managed to glitch into some bunkers in CoD Warzone, but not much has been discovered inside so far. It is mostly empty or unfinished areas of the game world. However, they are sure: something is coming, something will develop.
So far, players have not been able to open the bunkers normally – not even in connection with the many phones, keypads, or computers on the map that were thought to be the solution.
It is confirmed – the bunkers will open: Until now, there were no indications in the data that the bunkers can actually be opened. That has now changed.
With the latest patch, a new animation was introduced, showing the bunker door opening clearly. Additionally, sound files have emerged that are related to the opening process of the bunker door. So it seems that we will soon be able to open and enter the bunkers – possibly with the help of the red access card.
What can we expect in the bunkers?
The topic is being actively discussed, and there are numerous theories about what we might find in the protective buildings. This seems to be the kind of development and storytelling that Infinity Ward wants to focus on.
Keep in mind that these are still just theories and speculations, not confirmed facts. Here are some of them:
New loot: The most common theory is that there are so-called loot bunkers in the style of the vaults from Apex Legends. Many assume that if one manages to open a bunker, they will be rewarded with high-quality loot.
Data also supports this theory, as it suggests that the bunkers (or the surrounding areas) should provide the best quality loot.
Safe hideout: Some speculate that the bunkers might not only offer loot but also protection. Some players think it is possible that certain events could be triggered in the future in Warzone as an additional element – for example, a zombie attack or a nuclear strike. One would thus have to fight for the bunkers to take shelter from this danger.
Vehicle: Others assume that there could be a new vehicle waiting for players in the bunkers – for example, a powerful armored truck like in Ground War. So whoever manages to crack one of these bunkers could potentially secure a decisive advantage in battle.
New areas: Others believe that the map of Warzone might change soon and that the bunkers could represent entrances to new areas where battles can take place.
Finally, Infinity Ward has announced that they plan events in the style of Fortnite that should not only develop and change the story but also the world of Warzone.
What’s next in Warzone? Whatever the developers have in store with the bunkers and the red cards – the big secret is likely to remain hidden for much longer. After the recent data and map findings, it should not be long before we can finally see what is behind the thick bunker doors.
