Many players are finally hoping for a large new map for Call of Duty: Warzone. And there are some indications that this wish could come true. MeinMMO summarizes what is currently known about a potential new map for the Battle Royale.
In March 2021, Warzone celebrates its first birthday. Over the course of the first year, the Battle Royale has received numerous new content such as new weapons, operators, modes, or expansions like the train or the subway network.
A small new map, Rebirth Island, was recently introduced with the joint Season 1 of Warzone and CoD Black Ops Cold War. However, many players are still waiting in vain for a large new map, which, along with reasonable anti-cheat measures, is likely among the biggest wishes of many players.
Numerous experts and parts of the community are firmly convinced: a large new Battle Royale map is coming. The only question is: when? And there are indeed some hints that speak in favor of a large new game world in Warzone.
New Map for Warzone – Facts, Rumors, Leaks, Theories
This is officially known about a new Warzone map so far: Officially, nothing is known about a potential new map – neither release date nor any other details.
Some suspect that the developers are just putting more emphasis on preventing leaks. After all, weeks before the release of Warzone, practically everything relevant about the new mode was leaked. Nevertheless, there are some alleged leaks this time as well – although certainly not as many as there were before the launch of the Battle Royale.
New Warzone Map as a Combination of Fireteam Maps
This is what leaks and rumors say about the new map: Some leaks spoke of a new map at the start of the first joint season of Warzone and CoD Cold War. And indeed: there was a new map in this context – however, it was Rebirth Island, and this map is considerably smaller than the expansive game world around Verdansk. This disappointed some players.
However, there are also leaks and rumors that talk about a large new map for Warzone in the Ural Mountains focusing on Black Ops. Data miners found some intro videos, showing images of landscapes that are not yet found on the Verdansk map, but carry the designation “WZ”. Many consider this a direct hint towards Warzone.
These appeared to be maps for the large mode Fireteam: Dirty Bomb from Black Ops Cold War. But whether it’s Ruka, Alpine, or the new map Sanatorium – they all still carry the designation “WZ” in the game data. Here, many see a parallel to Modern Warfare and the original Warzone map around Verdansk.
Because the large Verdansk map, on which we are still navigating in Warzone, also consisted of numerous ground war maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. These ground war maps, just like the current Fireteam maps, were massive, expansive game worlds that were much larger than the maps for the regular 6vs6 format and also included vehicles.
In the 40vs40 mode Fireteam, there are also vehicles and further mechanics that have already been used in Warzone – such as parachuting, armor, looting, or the down status.
In short: It is basically believed that the Fireteam maps from Cold War will be combined as different areas into a large new Warzone map and further iconic locations from Black Ops like Summit or WMD (both also set in the Ural Mountains) will be added – just like was the case with the ground war maps from Modern Warfare and the Verdansk map from Warzone.

Leak also speaks of battles on water: ModernWarzone, a Twitter account known for its many accurate leaks about Call of Duty, echoes this sentiment.
It is said that the Sanatorium map will be represented on the new Warzone map with its lake (as another leak has already reported) and that a swimming mechanic as well as water vehicles could also be introduced into the Battle Royale.This would allow for battles in and on the water.
When could the new Warzone map come? Officially, as mentioned, nothing is known here. However, some leaks and rumors suggest that it might happen around March 2021, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of Warzone.
Others speculate that it might take a little longer. They assume that Treyarch might first release more Fireteam maps and only then combine them into a large new Warzone map as a new game world for the Battle Royale.
What will happen to Verdansk? This is also not known for sure. Larger updates for the map are not expected anymore. A greater focus on Black Ops and iconic locations from the series is rather assumed to come with a completely new map. However, it is currently also not expected that Verdansk will be discarded.
The most likely solution is that in Warzone you will then have the choice between multiple maps – Verdansk, Rebirth Island, and the new large map.
