The assault rifle FFAR 1 is currently considered overpowered in close combat in Call of Duty: Warzone. It has already survived two nerfs and continues to rock. However, further nerfs are expected, and MeinMMO shows you an assault rifle that is ready as a substitute – the Groza.
Call of Duty: Warzone does not offer much weapon variety in Season 2:
- For range, the tactical rifles AUG and M16 are considered standard
- In close combat, many players run through the streets of Verdansk with the assault rifle FFAR 1
However, the developers are already nerfing – both AUG and FFAR have already undergone two nerfs each, and the M16 is also slightly weaker than at the start of the season.
It is slowly becoming time to think about alternatives. At least for the FFAR, a strong substitute is already ready: the assault rifle Groza. The weapon from Season 1 has very similar characteristics to the current overpowered rifle FFAR and benefits from an interesting buff during the mid-season update.
Therefore, MeinMMO shows you details about the assault rifle, provides tips for setup assembly, and explains why the Groza is already a strong alternative to the FFAR.
Groza outperforms SMGs and will probably replace the FFAR
Why is the Groza considered the new FFAR? The assault rifle is essentially a slightly more restrained version of the dominant FFAR. The Groza comes with a few features that are currently highly sought after in the popular FFAR:
- Lower time-to-kill (TTK) than the best submachine guns
- Sufficient handling for short distances
- Mobile and fast rifle
- High range for a close combat rifle
A key change was introduced during the mid-season 2 with a barrel buff, which elevates the Groza to a new level: a barrel with damage increase. The “16.5” CMV, Military” barrel gives the Groza 2 extra damage points. The base damage increases from 28 to 30 and chest hits inflict 38 damage on the enemy (previously 36).
What seems unnecessary at first glance makes the weapon significantly more competitive against the FFAR. One of the major advantages of the popular FFAR is its hit composition for a kill. Time-to-kill statistics in Warzone often reflect the TTK for chest hits. The FFAR is very forgiving to its user – of the 8 shots you need for the strong TTK of 467 milliseconds, only 4 need to hit the chest. Where you land the other 4 hits doesn’t make a difference – except for headshots, which can further reduce kill time.
The Groza already had a similarly low time-to-kill of 477 milliseconds before the barrel buff. However, you had to hit all 7 rounds in the enemy’s chest to achieve that value. With the new barrel, 2 of the 7 rounds can also hit the opponent’s knee and you still benefit from the low chest time-to-kill.
Additionally, the Groza has 2 advantages over the FFAR. Your ADS speed (aim down sights time) is slightly lower, and the Groza has a 60-round magazine, but a lower fire rate. Unlike the FFAR, the assault rifle does not burn through its magazines as quickly. This makes the Groza a strong alternative to the FFAR, which has suffered from its nerfs.
According to some Warzone experts, this does not allow the Groza to surpass the FFAR, but it makes it significantly more interesting in the battle royale. Especially, but not exclusively, when an FFAR nerf comes. An English analysis of the Groza by CoD YouTuber “TheXclusiceAce” is linked here:
However, keep in mind: In the video, Ace mentions an infinite range with the new “16.5” CMV, Military” barrel. This was a bug that has already disappeared from the game. The range of the Groza without attachments is about 31 meters.
CoD Warzone: Groza setup with extra damage
- Muzzle: GRU Muzzle Brake
- Barrel: 16.5″ CMV, Military
- Stock: KGB Pad
- Underbarrel: Spetsnaz Grip
- Ammunition: Spetsnaz 60-Round Drum
The GRU suppressor is the Soviet version of the Agency suppressor and is therefore considered essential for many “Cold War” weapons in Warzone. The power attachment provides not only sound suppression but also increases bullet speed and range. However, your ADS speed decreases slightly.
With the barrel, you gain the important damage boost, but you also slightly reduce your range. Compared to the “Cold War” MP5, which can somewhat keep up with the TTK of Groza and FFAR, you still have more than twice the distance in which you deal full damage. With this setup, the Groza enters its second damage range at about 30 meters.
The grip and the KGB pad improve the important mobility in Warzone. Your ADS speed and movement speed when aiming down sights (strafing) are very strong. Together with the large 60-round drum, you have a very strong tool for close combat in Warzone.
What else can I try? If you don’t like the iron sight, swap the stock for a sight. CoD YouTuber “JGOD” currently even recommends in his English analysis (via YouTube) to opt for a sight, as it seems to him that the Groza’s iron sight on the military barrel is broken or somehow inaccurate.
How do I get the weapon? The firearm was part of the Battle Pass in the Season of Black Ops Cold War. If you want to obtain it later, you must complete a challenge – Eliminate 3 or more players in a match without dying.
Strengths, weaknesses, and values of the Groza

- Damage (base): 28

- Damage (head): 45
- Bullet speed: 628 meters/second
- Reload time: 2.12 seconds
If only an FFAR nerf comes, the Groza takes over
Currently, many players expect further nerfs for the top weapons. Should the FFAR be nerfed again and the Groza remains as it is, then the assault rifle will take on the role of the FFAR.
As a secondary weapon to a sniper or tactical rifle, assault rifles focused on close combat are currently simply too powerful for submachine guns to compete. Only the CR-56 AMAX is still in the game – also an assault rifle. Why should one choose an SMG when assault rifles deal more damage, have a longer range, and are also easier to control?
The MAC-10 submachine gun continues to be one of the most popular weapons in Warzone, but statistically, SMG players have disadvantages in close combat. And after an FFAR nerf, this fight will almost certainly be against a Groza. You also now know the appropriate setup for it.
