The submachine gun AUG was among the absolute top weapons at the release of Call of Duty: Warzone, but fell off after a nerf. 2 pro players show with their setups that it is still a blast in Battle Royale.
Why was the AUG so powerful at the release of Warzone? The submachine gun rumbled through the first weeks as a strong assault rifle replacement in Call of Duty: Warzone, boasting outstanding time-to-kill values (TTK).
A nerf put the weapon back on track: it maintained its top damage values but lost its outstanding control.
What makes it still strong? The AUG continues to benefit from its high damage and is very controllable at short range. It also offers better range than the top choice MP5 and is particularly interesting for Warzone players who cannot make use of the MP5.
It is one of the strong alternatives for combat distances up to 20 meters, along with the MP7 and the P90:
- MP5: Best TTK, but low range and a bit wobbly
- MP7: Nice stability and 60-round magazine
- P90: Extremely stable, but somewhat weak TTK
- AUG: Good mix of control and TTK

AUG setups for Warzone that can compete with the MP5
Which setup should I try? To provide you with strong setups, we looked at how major Warzone YouTubers play the MP. We then tested the setups ourselves to assess recoil and overall playability.
The first setup comes from “Nickmercs”, one of the largest streamers and YouTubers in Warzone, who also participates as a pro player in many tournaments at the highest level. The second comes from “Swagg”, who also runs a significant YouTube channel with CoD content and frequently competes at major tournaments.
Warzone: Nickmercs’ AUG setup
- Muzzle: Silencer (Monolithic)
- Barrel: Extended 407mm Barrel
- Underbarrel: Commando Foregrip
- Grip: Rubberized Grip Tape
- Perk: Sleight of Hand
What does the Nickmercs setup bring? The AUG is quite rough without attachments for better aim and does not feel particularly comfortable to play. The barrel and underbarrel give the weapon the control it needs.
Together with the silencer, you also increase the range for the first damage range to nearly 18 meters. In this range, you take down enemies with 3 plates in about 570 milliseconds. The MP5, with its most popular setup from November 2020, already takes 680 milliseconds at about 10 meters.
The grip tape gives back a bit of the aim speed that you lose with the barrel and silencer. To not burden the weapon further, a larger magazine and sight are also missing. The Iron Sight (Iron & Sights) works fine at short ranges and the somewhat sparse ammunition in the magazine is balanced out again by the perk “Sleight of Hand”.

Warzone: Swagg’s AUG setup
- Muzzle: Silencer (Monolithic)
- Laser: Tactical Laser
- Underbarrel: Commando Foregrip
- Ammo: 5.56 NATO 30 Round Magazine
- Perk: Sleight of Hand
What does the Swagg setup bring? The pro Warzone player gets more damage on his bullets with the 5.56 conversion kit and also has 5 more rounds in the magazine. This makes the weapon a bit slower, but the tactical laser balances that out.
For better recoil control, the commando underbarrel is sufficient for this setup. Overall, the Swagg setup tends to go sideways a bit more but offers less vertical recoil. Both versions can be easily controlled, and you can easily engage enemies in the crucial 20-meter range of SMGs and maintain your aim.

AUG compared to other meta weapons
Where does the AUG stand compared to other strong weapons? Especially the AUG with the 5.56 ammunition comes very close to the MP5 in TTK. However, you get a bit more range. In combat against strong shotguns, like the R9-0 with Dragon’s Breath, you can maintain enough distance from the enemy and still benefit from the strong first damage range. The AUG without 5.56 ammo is exactly on MP7 level:
