Call of Duty: Warzone 2 has announced “Ranked Play” for Season 3. The mode especially benefits good players looking for a challenge. However, there are already calls that this will change the matchmaking of normal matches.
It was a great wish of many good players from the first Warzone in their absolute heyday: Ranked Play. This is a game mode that focuses matchmaking on skill.
Players will be classified into a kind of league according to their values and performances and will play only against players of a similar level.
The matchmaking of Warzone and Call of Duty in general has been critically discussed for years. And the announcement for Ranked Play in Warzone 2 clearly shows again what many good players are after: A full table set with noobs for a delicious slaughter test.
Ranked Play is set to come in Season 3, Season 2 for CoD Warzone 2 has just been released. Here is the trailer:
“Can we lower SBMM in normal lobbies?”
The big trigger term of the last years is “skill-based matchmaking,” or SBMM for short. It has developed into a fighting term, daily SBMM memes are created and many players from the active communities on Twitter or Reddit are critical of the system.
People did not want a “strict” SBMM. They desire lobbies that offer a wide range of skills. From noobs, casual players to semi-professionals, everything should be included.
After the announcement of the SBMM mode Ranked Play for Warzone 2, demands came directly that the unpopular SBMM in normal lobbies could be lowered. Here is a tweet from the CoD news account “@ModernWarzone” just a few minutes after the announcement:
The tweet states: “Now that we will soon have a ranked mode in Warzone, can we lower SBMM in normal lobbies a bit?” Similar discussions can also be found on Reddit (via reddit.com) – although a lot is also being discussed about the return of the Warzone mode “Plunder”.
The SBMM is criticized because strong players often have to face similarly strong players. In Ranked Play, one would deliberately engage strong players – but for normal lobbies, a lower difficulty level is desired.
The goal of matchmaking in Call of Duty is to keep players in the game for as long as possible. Factors such as fairness and skills are parts of the system, but no one factor primarily determines matchmaking – especially not in large 100-player matches like in Warzone.
Nevertheless, the supposed SBMM has been criticized for years.
