The shooter series Call of Duty is about to release its annual title. This year, it’s going back to World War II with CoD: Vanguard and offers content for solo, PvP, and co-op players. MeinMMO takes a quick check to see who might be interested in Vanguard.
What is CoD: Vanguard? Call of Duty is the largest shooter franchise in gaming and delights millions of players each year with its first-person shooters. CoD stands for fast action, many battles, and plenty of unlockable content like equipment, weapons, and matching cosmetics.
The historical setting changes every year, and with Vanguard, the shooter series goes back to its roots: World War II.
You can experience in the solo campaign how the world’s first special unit accomplishes an impossible job or compete against numerous other player-soldiers on various maps in different modes in multiplayer. Friends of a well-crafted co-op adventure can also enjoy themselves by playing in the zombie mode against hordes of resurrected undead.
You can get a brief overview of the modes in our video:
When does Vanguard release? The new Call of Duty celebrates its release on Friday, November 5th.
Checklist – Is Vanguard for me?
To give you a quick overview, we’ve prepared 10 statements for you. If you answer “Yes” to 7 of them, Vanguard is definitely worth a look. Further down, we will provide you with more detailed information on the contents of Vanguard at release and afterwards.
- I have played CoD before and it was fun
- I like the setting in World War II
- I enjoy fast battles with frequent exchanges of fire
- I appreciate a wide selection of unlockable content
- I don’t need big vehicles in my shooters
- I value a single-player campaign
- I am a fan of good graphics and strong gunplay
- I like it when a PvP shooter offers co-op content
- I expect new, free content for a certain period
- I don’t mind that Vanguard will be “over” after a year
Vanguard offers 3 major game modes: Solo, Multiplayer, Co-op Mode
Why should I check out Vanguard? Are you into shooters and have high standards for graphics and gameplay? Then you can’t miss Call of Duty. Although a new installment comes out every year, the developers are working hard to set new benchmarks in terms of gameplay and graphics.
CoD: Vanguard also doesn’t reinvent the multiplayer shooter. However, it offers a lot of content, polished technology, and excellent gunplay. Additionally, CoD wants to offer something for everyone again this year:
- Campaign for solo players
- Multiplayer for PvP fans
- Zombie mode for co-op lovers
What does the campaign offer? In the campaign, you take on the role of 4 soldiers from the allied armies and get to know them in the first missions. Later they come together, creating the very first special unit in history: “Vanguard”.
Together, just before the war’s end, you set out to thwart the plans of a nasty Nazi officer who is already planning for the future before the fall of the Third Reich. To prevent a second Nazi Reich, you must take out the SS officer “Friesinger”.
Along the way through the story, you will see the various fronts of the war and fight through the complexities of this time to protect freedom.
What does the multiplayer offer? Call of Duty is brutal shooter action in multiplayer and offers shooter fans a wide range of playable content. With the new “Combat Pacing”, you also have control over how many players you want to take on one of the standard modes:
- There are modes with a lot of action and also tactical modes with only one life per round
- With Combat Pacing, you can set how much action you want: more players = more battles
- Each week there’s a new playlist and modes with different rules
For motivation, countless challenges await, allowing you to unlock equipment and cosmetics. A large progression system lets you level various things and rewards you with new items:
- Account Level: Initially for equipment, later for prestige rewards
- Weapon Level: Unlocks the attachments of a weapon to change its properties
- Battle Pass: Each live season has a pass with 100 levels full of rewards
- Operator Level: Play a specific character to earn further rewards for them
What does the zombie mode offer? There is also a co-op mode where you must prevent an army of the dead from overrunning Europe with your friends or strangers. There is one mission in the game at launch: “The Beginning”.
You receive a command center in zombie-infested Stalingrad and must unlock further areas through missions to stop the threat. A crazy story and crazy builds from skills, weapons, and perks provide high replay value and many dozen hours of zombie action before you explore and see everything.
What is different from its predecessor? Vanguard is more oriented towards Modern Warfare, the CoD from 2019. The new Call of Duty relies on a polished graphics engine from CoD MW and brings features like weapon mounting or tactical sprint back into the game.

A whole year of new content – And Warzone
What’s next for Vanguard? The new CoD returns to live seasons and brings a new season with a fresh battle pass and new prestige levels to level up every 6 to 8 weeks. Each season also brings a new batch of content – once at launch and more significant content chunks with the mid-season updates.
Before the release of the next Call of Duty in 2022, there will be a total of 6 seasons, each bringing new experiences, weapons, and fresh air into the game.
Additionally, there is the Battle Royale Warzone. The free-to-play Warzone acts as a link between the annual paid titles and also receives content from the new CoD. With the launch of Season 1 of Vanguard on December 2nd, Warzone will even switch entirely to Vanguard technology, implement a new map, and receive nearly 40 new weapons from Vanguard.
