Call of Duty: Vanguard has launched a new crossover. This time it’s about the hit anime Attack on Titan. In the bundle you’ll receive the typical swords and animations as well as a skin. But many fans are wondering what the developers were thinking?
What is this crossover bundle? Call of Duty Vanguard regularly brings special skin bundles for the multiplayer mode and Warzone to the shop. They usually include an operator skin, weapon blueprints, and various animations and other gadgets.
These bundles have a specific theme, for example “Pirates” or they are inspired by other franchises. There were crossovers in Cold War, among others, with action films from the 80s, including Rambo and Die Hard.
In Vanguard, however, the theme of the current crossover bundle is the anime Attack on Titan (AoT). The bundle includes:
- A skin for operator Daniel, who is inspired by the AoT character Levi Ackerman
- Two weapons named after other AoT heroines
- The iconic Titan-slaying blades as melee weapons
- The emblem of the “Wings of Freedom”
- A potato emblem, a homage to a potato-eating character from the series
- Various finishers modeled after the typical attacks against Titans.
Fans are wondering what the developers were thinking with the Attack on Titan crossover
Here are the reactions: As soon as the news about the AoT bundle was revealed on Twitter, there was a flood of incredulous reactions from fans on Twitter and reddit.
Fans wrote among other things:
- “This is the strangest collaboration I’ve ever seen!”
- “They messed it up and instead of Levi, we just have a World War-type guy cosplaying!”
- “The finishers look great, but God, the Levi skin is just terrible!”
- “Wait, WTF? Did this really happen?”
- “The operator himself looks dissatisfied!”
- “Mom, I want an AoT skin! – We have an AoT skin at home, from Wish!”
What bothers the fans? It’s noticeable in the reactions that hardly anyone complains about the nice weapons and animations. They are, in fact, highly sought after by fans. What upsets people is the skin. Because, according to many fans, it simply does not look like Levi Ackerman, it is just the operator Daniel wearing Levi’s jacket and scarf and thereby basically cosplaying.
Many fans wished it could have been different. After all, Rambo also received his own skin and not just a “cosplay variant” where a different dude just runs around half-naked with a headband.
Moreover, the choice of Daniel Yatsu as the basis for the skin does not fit. Daniel is of Japanese descent, while Levi is not depicted as Asian in the series.
Others complain that such anime crossovers have no place in a “realistic” game like CoD and should stick to Fortnite. By the way, there was recently a crossover with the also very popular anime Naruto.
