On the evening of November 18, a new update for Call of Duty: Vanguard went live and MeinMMO shows you the English patch notes. Among other things, a mechanic that severely affected your aiming was weakened, and the powerful shotguns received a nerf.
Slowly but surely, the updates for the new Call of Duty: Vanguard are rolling out. With the already third small patch this week, the developers continue to address the game’s issues and process the community’s feedback from the past weeks.
One of the most controversial mechanics was the focus of the latest update: ADS spread or the bloom effect when firing. With the adjustments, you can now hit your targets better. The powerful shotguns are now weaker. What else has changed, you can find out here.
Vanguard: Update on November 18 weakens ADS bloom and shotguns
What has changed with the “bloom”? The mechanic basically remains in the game and causes your first shot after aiming down sights not to hit where your crosshair indicates. There is a programmed random factor that leads to a certain spread on the first shot.
Each weapon has a unique “random behavior” and the spread was sometimes stronger, sometimes hardly noticeable. But especially the two assault rifles AS44 and the Volkssturmgewehr and the submachine guns were heavily affected.
After the changes, the first analyses of the adjusted bloom effect show that for assault rifles it now looks like this:
To measure the bloom, the CoD expert “TheXclusiveAce” compared the effect before and after the patch (weapons without attachments). Important for the effect: Only the first bullet counts when firing, and Ace only shot again after the weapon returned to its original position.
It is clearly visible that at least the assault rifles now have less bloom on the first shot. Your first bullet should now more often hit the target.
What has changed with the shotguns? The shotguns from Vanguard were fierce in the first weeks and even led to matches on the small map “The House” lasting less than a minute.
Thanks to the balance adjustments, the shotguns should now be significantly weaker. The developers write about this:
- Balance adjustment for all shotguns that affect range, spread, downsides while hip-firing, and more.
One-shot kills at over 7 meters with just a small shotgun charge are now a thing of the past. This may not lead to less chaos in the small matches, but definitely more fairness.

The small disturbances after the release are gradually disappearing from Vanguard, but there is still a lot to be done for the developers. There are still some way too powerful weapon options in the game, and the team lobbies are sometimes very error-prone.
If the CoD creators continue at such a high update pace, the most pressing issues should soon be resolved. However, first, there is double XP on everything: CoD Vanguard & Warzone are offering double XP for the free weekend – here’s how to use it properly
