A new season of the Call of Duty League is starting, and all participating teams were allowed to create special skins that will also appear in the shop of Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2. The skin of the ‘L.A. Thieves’ is particularly popular because it brings back old, unpleasant memories.
If you want to give Warzone veterans goosebumps, you whisper very quietly ‘Roze’. Roze is a female operator from Call of Duty, who was part of the first Warzone and is also currently available in Modern Warfare 2.
Now, however, she has a recognizable face. In the past, she was completely in black and masked – the deepest black you can imagine in a dark corner of a room in the middle of nowhere in Verdansk.
The Roze skin was a real plague – a skin that disrupted the balancing because it was harder to see than other skins. On top of that, there was a hint of pay-to-win. The pitch-black mega-sweaty Roze was only available in one season through the Battle Pass.
Now the skin packs of the CDL teams have hit the shop of Call of Duty, and all eyes are on the skin of the L.A. Thieves team. Because this is supposedly ‘Roze 2.0’.
The L.A. Thieves skin is as black as night
What kind of skin is this? It is the home skin of the L.A. Thieves. It is available in the versions ‘Male’ and ‘Female’. We embed an image of the complete bundle:
Aside from a few red elements with the team’s ‘LA’ lettering, the skin is black. No eyes, no big accents – a pure and deep black. Thus, the skin actually reminds less of Roze, and more of another nasty black skin from the first Warzone.
Is the skin really that bad? The skin made it to the top sellers on Steam right at release:
Also on Reddit, there are the first reports about how often the skin has already been seen in matches of Modern Warfare 2 (via reddit.com). With spreading and usage, the skin could already compete with Roze.
Whether the skin actually provides similar advantages remains to be seen. At least the CoD pro and assault rifle specialist ‘Octane’ is convinced of that. However, he is also part of the LA Thieves this season:
What does the team say about it? Nadeshot is a former CoD pro and founder of the esports organization ‘100 Thieves’ to which the LA Thieves also belong.
He commented on how the skin came about and said that they didn’t really think about it:
Statement in the video from minute 00:15 – “We had very little time to put this together. But we also liked the simplicity of our jerseys from last year and we didn’t want to change much. […] When I saw this, I thought, this thing is not exactly … great. But we had little time and few options”.
You can hear that at least Nadeshot would have appreciated a bit more color accents. So now we have a deep black skin monster in the game, and every really dark spot has become a bit more dangerous.
CoD Warzone 2 likely won’t have as many problems with such dark skins as its predecessor. For example, it uses different resolutions around enemies and supports perception.
