A new event from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 envelops 3 popular maps in a mystical sci-fi design and brings you 15 rewards. We show you how to earn the rewards.
What kind of event is this? On January 3, 2024, the limited-time event “Vortex: Realm of War” started in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
The event runs until January 17, 2024, and introduced three special variants of the maps Rust, Scrapyard, and Quarry into the game. The maps are now shrouded in a mystical sci-fi design reminiscent of the art style of the zombie mode.
The event also introduced the new Vortex mode to the game, where you face off against other players in free-for-all with the ray gun known from the zombie mode. The ray gun has a very low fire rate but can eliminate opponents with a single shot.
In addition to the three map variants and the Vortex mode, there is a new operator bundle and 15 rewards that you can unlock during the event. The final reward is a weapon camo called “Magma.”
All rewards of the MW3 Vortex event and how to unlock them
How do you unlock the 15 rewards? To unlock the 15 rewards of the event, you simply need to earn enough experience points. It doesn’t matter which mode you play. It is not necessary to play the new Vortex mode.

Players like the maps, but not the mode
What are the first opinions on the event? The three map variants are particularly well received by players. Many users on Reddit and X.com (formerly Twitter) describe the design as truly beautiful and even wish that these maps remain in the map rotation after the event.
- Skysflies via Reddit: “First impression: The maps are beautiful, but the ray gun itself is very poor. It’s a one-shot kill, but it has such a low fire rate that it is quite difficult to use.”
- Main_Preparation_271 via Reddit: “In my opinion, the new mode is mediocre. It would be great if they [the developers] added the 3 maps to the map rotation for all modes after the event ends. These are great redesigns.”
However, the most discussed topic in the community is a bug that caused the event tab in the game to be missing. They cannot see the various rewards as well as the experience points earned.
The developers have already communicated that they are aware of the bug and that a fix will be implemented in the coming weeks. They also stated that the challenges can still be progressed and the rewards can continue to be unlocked.
