CoD is a grind game. Weapon levels and camos provide plenty to do after the feeling of the “new game” has long faded. However, the “Mastery Camos”, like a gold skin for weapons, are much easier to obtain in Modern Warfare 2 than before – a streamer has impressively proven this.
What are “Mastery Camos”? The gameplay of Call of Duty is designed for fast action. There are not dozens of hours of story content or a large open world to keep you busy for weeks. A few hours are enough to have seen all maps once and played all modes.
Nevertheless, there are many types of progression in the game: account and weapon levels are the most prominent, with Season 1 adding the Battle Pass. And then there are the weapon camos, also called “camos”.
If you complete specific tasks with certain weapons, there are skins for those weapons. If you really go for it, there are insane new designs, such as weapons made of gold or platinum. Those are the “Mastery Camos”.
This has always been a real challenge to unlock – but in Modern Warfare 2, that’s different.
What else has changed, you’ll see in the video:
Streamer grabs 20 gold camos in 42 hours
What did the Twitch streamer do? Reidboyy is a rather small full-time streamer with 80,000 followers, known in the community for Call of Duty: Warzone. He was one of the few streamers who has always played Warzone on console – including the FoV disadvantages.
Since the launch of Modern Warfare 2, Reidboyy has been grinding and has played for 42 hours straight. At the time of the article, his stream shows that he is currently sleeping – the stream is at almost 48 hours.
During this time, the Twitch streamer has managed to already snag 20 of the coveted gold camos:
Update, October 30: By now, Reidboyy has 26 gold weapons (via twitter.com).
Is it really much easier than before? Definitely. Even regular players who can’t grind CoD for 42 hours straight have this year’s chance at many gold camos. The grind for the “Mastery Camos” has never been easier than in Modern Warfare 2.
As an example, here are the tasks you need to complete for the gold skin of the starter weapon M4:
- Reach weapon level 18
- 50 kills
- 50 kills while aiming down sights
- 10 double kills
- 15 kills from behind
- 10x 3 kills without dying
Compared to the previous tasks, that’s ridiculously low. Players report that you can achieve the gold camos for a weapon within 2 hours. As a comparison, the predecessor CoD: Vanguard is mentioned, where you could easily spend 10 hours on a gold camo (via reddit.com).
Also, aside from the weapon mastery, the camo system has been revised. You no longer unlock countless skins with each weapon individually, but rather get a skin, such as for the M4, and then have that skin available for all other weapons.
In addition, another camo grind endboss has been significantly toned down: rocket launcher camos.
In the past, you had to complete many tasks with the launchers and spend an eternity in a mostly unpopular playstyle, but now rocket launchers only have one camo challenge. Once that is completed, you immediately get the gold skin.
Let us know your thoughts on the new camo grind in the comments. Major change or perhaps too easy, because you might have completed all challenges in a few weeks?
