In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare & Warzone, a large new update was on the way. This brought a lot of content, but it also cost a lot of storage – an unwanted habit for CoD players.
The new update is huge: The new Update 1.21 for Modern Warfare and Warzone provided a ton of new content. Among other things, the ominous bunkers in Warzone can now be opened.
In addition, there were adjustments like weapon changes and bug fixes. Also, the special Warzone feature, the Gulag, has been revised. All of this resulted in a quite extensive update, which again requires a lot of storage space.
Depending on the platform, the data package for the major mid-season update varied in size:
- On PS4, it was about 22 GB
- The Xbox One needed about 30 GB
- On PC, it is also about 30 GB
These numbers are not exactly small – especially since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare already takes up a lot of space on PC and console (for colleague Benedict Grothaus, it takes up 193 GB on PC). And many players are slowly getting annoyed by the huge updates.
Are MW & Warzone asking for too much?
This is how the players react: In the subreddit for Modern Warfare, there are currently two major discussions. On one hand, the contents are being discussed, such as the buff of the Holger 26.
Here, especially its secret variant, the assault rifle G36C, seems to convince the players: “I just tried it out. I think the G36C is now the best-handling assault rifle in the game,” reports one user (via reddit): “If only it had a heavy barrel now. The damage is still a bit low, but it is fast.”
On the other hand, there is a big problem: Many players complain about the size of the updates, even if they bring positive content to Modern Warfare. This overshadows even the joy of one of the most popular multiplayer maps from Modern Warfare 3, Hardhat, which is now back.
This is the problem: The updates force many players to free up space on their storage media to keep MW and Warzone up to date. Especially on the consoles PS4 and Xbox One, this problem can quickly occur if you do not sufficiently expand storage or have only treated yourself to a smaller SSD as an upgrade. Sometimes, other games have to be deleted just to manage the update download and installation:
“This is the update that’s finally going to give me the last straw,” reports one user (via reddit): “When I want to update, I have to delete the last other game on my PS4.”
Others react with humor, like user “zhivagoo” (via reddit):
Another player humorously defends the download size, with the title: “Unpopular opinion: I love the size of these updates” (via reddit). He writes:
I was able to get a lot done around the house, did laundry, and so on. During this last update, I was able to translate Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire into Latin. And in this free time, I had a lot of time for self-reflection.
He could have played another game – but by now, nothing but Call of Duty is left on the drive. A jab at the storage space that Modern Warfare now requires.
Overall, many players seem to be getting tired of the huge downloads, even if they like the content of the new update. Especially since this problem has been bothering CoD fans for a long time.
