With the latest major update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, a new weapon entered the shooter’s portfolio: the LMG Bruen Mk9. Unlocking the new LMG can be quite annoying. However, the boss promises that it will be easier soon.
What kind of LMG is this? The Bruen Mk9 is a light machine gun (LMG) from Season 3, which was implemented in Modern Warfare and Warzone with the Patch 1.20 on April 29, 2020. The new weapon essentially embodies the M249 SAW from earlier installments of Call of Duty.
How can I unlock it? Currently, there are only two ways to get the Bruen Mk9:
- either you buy the “Encryption” bundle in the shop for 1,200 CoD Points
- or you complete the challenge for the rifle.
The bundle includes the legendary blueprint for “Spannungsspitze”, which uses the Bruen Mk9 as the base weapon. With this blueprint you can unlock the MG, but you have to pay around €11-12.
For the challenge, you need to kill three enemies with an LMG in 15 rounds while they are near a smoke grenade. This challenge is currently frustrating some players because it can take an enormous amount of time.
Whether it is worth it, we cannot evaluate on MeinMMO yet, as it has not been available long enough. As of Season 3, the PKM is still the strongest weapon of its kind.
Unlocking the Bruen Mk9 will be easier
This is how unlocking will be easier: Co-Design Director Joe Cecot spoke up on Twitter regarding a player’s complaint. After a player unlocked the Bruen Mk9, another Twitter user commented that the challenge was too hard and needed to be changed.
Cecot confirmed that the developers are currently working on the issue. For the challenge, kills will count whether the opponent or the player is in the smoke.
Working on a change to make it count both if you or the victim are in the smoke.

However, he did not reveal when these changes would come. In the official Trello of the developers, where they post current and upcoming tasks, there is still no ticket for this (as of May 4).
Why it frustrates players: The major issue with the challenge, according to the opinion of many players, is that the smoke interferes with gameplay. The modification to the challenge only addresses this issue to a limited extent.
Although less smoke is needed overall, many players will still work with smoke grenades to unlock the Bruen Mk9. Additionally, the challenge is relatively tough, as it is impossible to see through the smoke without certain optics.
If you do not want to wait for the unlocking to become easier, you can instead purchase the blueprint. With the also “Frankenstein” introduced on April 29, you can even use individual parts of different blueprints.
