The popular shooters Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and the Battle Royale Warzone are once again facing a cheating problem. This time, it specifically involves console or controller players.
What kind of cheat is this? The cheat is a modification for an adapter that can be legally purchased and used. The adapter is called “Cronusmax” and is compatible with controllers for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
A mod for this adapter allows players to almost completely negate the recoil of a weapon. This means that players using this cheat can stay nearly on target even during sustained fire, as a clip from Twitter user @Skadezy illustrates:

Normally, you would need the right attachments on your weapon to minimize recoil and aim as accurately as possible. Even then, you still have to compensate manually. The modification takes care of all of that for you.
Especially in conjunction with certain aim-assist settings that many players claim are already unfair, this can become a significant problem. While the cheat is not as powerful as an aimbot or wallhack, it is noticeably unfair.
The cheat is almost “legal” and hard to detect
What is the big problem with this? The Cronusmax adapter is legal, freely available, and can be used with most gamepads. Only the modification is problematic in this way.
However, it cannot truly be detected. If a player hits so accurately, they might simply be very skilled or using a good build, like the M13 as a “laser”, and also mastering it extremely well.
With current means, it is likely not possible to determine if someone who hits well is using the Cronusmax adapter with the anti-recoil mod or is just skilled at the game. The game code itself is not manipulated.
Although theoretically a mouse can also be used with the adapter, its main application area is controllers. Cronus claims to be the “world’s best controller emulation”.
What is the adapter actually for? The adapters are actually designed to suppress interference from other signals when using controllers, or to make certain input devices compatible with specific consoles – for instance, a steering wheel with the PS4 or controllers on other platforms.
The company itself advertises that thousands of mods work on the adapter and that players can program their own functions if they want. This includes cheat mods like the anti-recoil mod, which are hard to detect.
Cheaters on consoles?
The issue of cheaters has been a topic for a long time and is now dividing the community. Players on PS4 and Xbox One repeatedly accuse the PC platform of producing cheaters and contaminating the game. Many refuse crossplay for this reason.
Developers are now taking consequences from the debate and have introduced new measures against cheaters. These are already showing results, and the cheaters are complaining loudly.
The community itself is also taking action against dishonest players. In a Ground War match, for instance, a cheater terrorized the entire lobby. His own team then trapped him with shields. This way, at least the other players could continue playing in peace.
