Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is in cooperation with PlayStation, allowing exclusive content for a year on the Sony console. The time is up, and this content is now available on PC & Xbox as well. MeinMMO shows you what is available and whether it’s worth it.
What’s on offer? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare unlocked the Survival mode for Xbox & PC on October 1st. Due to a partnership between Sony and CoD, this PvE mode was previously only playable on PlayStation. Community manager Ashton Williams from developer Infinity Ward confirmed on Twitter that the mode is now available:
In the lower part of her tweet, Williams writes: “And yes, starting October 1st, Xbox and PC players have access to Survival mode.” To give you an overview of what to expect and whether you should check it out, here’s a brief overview of Survival mode.
Survival mode for Xbox & PC
What can the Survival mode do? The Survival mode is part of the Special Ops modes and has its own unique rules. You start with up to 4 people in a team on one of the 6vs6 maps from multiplayer and must defend yourself against incoming waves.
Since the launch of Modern Warfare, new maps have been added, and now you can enjoy 9 different maps that all go online on PC & Xbox:
- Aniyah Palace
- Grazna Raid
- Piccadilly
- St. Petrograd
- Azhir Cave
- Shoot House
- Talsik Backlot
- Crash
- Hovec Sawmill
How does it work? You can go into battle solo or with up to four players. At the start, you are poorly equipped, have to search for weapons, and collect more cash with each wave for better gear. You will also find supply stations on the maps that offer you weapons or equipment for sale.
The enemies are the same as those who annoy you in the Spec Ops mode. You will be attacked by normal NPC soldiers without many special features, but also heavy Juggernauts or exploding enemies. The enemy forces can even be supported by local air support, sending helicopters after you.
You need to try to keep track and limit the number of enemy soldiers. Fallen comrades can be revived, but there is also the “Tactical Insertion” item to buy to secure a respawn. If the whole team is taken out, the round is over.
Is it fun? It’s a bit like the other Spec Ops modes – the entry is quite tough. But after a few rounds, you’ll know the weaknesses of the enemies, how to always have enough ammunition, and how to quickly shoot down opponents.
This can actually be quite enjoyable and offers some fast-paced action for a few rounds. However, the mode appears somewhat carelessly designed. You earn experience points for weapons, your account, and the Battle Pass, but the mode doesn’t seem to have a real purpose. There’s no real goal; it feels more like a kind of busywork therapy.
Is it worth checking out? If you want to face a challenging PvE challenge with your team, give it a try. You can enhance your communication and level up the Season 6 Battle Pass.
But if you haven’t missed the mode so far, there’s no need to get overly excited now. There’s nothing more than a nice little diversion here. We’d rather recommend the Special Ops missions – here you have a clear mission and can also unlock skins for the operators.

What about Warzone players & Combat Packs?
Can I use this as a Warzone player? The Survival mode is part of the Special Ops segment and is only available to purchasers of Modern Warfare. If you play the free-to-play Warzone without having bought the complete CoD MW, unfortunately, there’s no new Survival mode for you.
Will there be more PS4 content for PC & Xbox? Currently, there are only hints about the Survival mode, but actually, the free Combat Packs of Warzone, which reward players with cosmetics, should not be exclusive anymore.
In the PS-Store description of the current Combat Pack (Season 5 Reloaded): “Exclusive for PlayStation®Plus members until October 1, 2020.” However, you cannot currently unlock the package on PC. There are also no current statements about the Combat Packs on how or if they will become available for players on other platforms. As soon as there is news about it, you will find out on MeinMMO, because the packs have always been quite cool.
Even if the Survival mode offers a nice addition rather than essential content, the entire Special Ops mode is a nice package with activities. If you’ve stayed away from it so far, definitely give it a try and try your hand at the missions. Here are some tips for getting started.
Since Warzone continues even after the release of Black Ops Cold War, you can also continue to use cosmetics earned in the Spec Ops mode in the future. Get yourself a few skins before the storage hog CoD MW leaves your hard drive for good. Check here how Warzone might continue with Cold War.
