Season 2 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has brought a gigantic patch that many players had to manage. Now, one of the developers apologizes for it and explains why this patch is a good thing.
How big was the patch: Console and PC players had to swallow hard, as the patch at the start of Season 2 was so large that they sometimes had to delete entire games to make space. Depending on the platform, the update was as follows:
- 68 GB for PC
- 67 GB for Xbox One
- 51 GB for PS4
At the start of the download, there was a lot of complaining. The Production Director of Infinity Ward, Paul Haile, noticed this and apologized on Twitter. At the same time, he also explained why this update will lead to smaller patches in the future.
Huge update makes Modern Warfare smaller
This is what the developer says: In several tweets, Haile explains why this patch was so important. He says:
While Season 2 is live, I would like to apologize for the download size of this update. We are constantly trying to tackle both the download size as well as the disk footprint, and in this case, we are sending new asset packages to reduce the overall size of the game.

He then explains that we should now see that the size of Modern Warfare has generally become smaller. Old assets that were unnecessarily large have been removed, and new ones added, which is why the update was so large initially.
In addition, measures have been taken in the update to make future patches smaller. The data should now be managed better.
This is what you will be able to choose soon: Haile also mentions that in future updates there should be the option for players to choose the DLCs they want to have. Unused files will therefore not even be added to your game and won’t increase the patch size for you.
However, this is expected to be introduced only with a future update. When exactly that will be, Haile leaves open.
In conclusion to his tweets, Haile also mentions that he is well aware of the size of Modern Warfare and that the team is working to minimize the necessary files.
This may also be hidden in the patch: Although not officially confirmed yet, the new battle royale mode is almost certain. Many players also suspect this is included in the huge update, which would certainly be a significant part of the files.

It is likely to be revealed in the coming days whether Modern Warfare will bring the new mode into the game with this update. Numerous buffs and nerfs to weapons were definitely included.
