The shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had its big release on November 10, 2023. After the campaign was playable in advance, the zombie and multiplayer modes also went online. What does the community say after the full release of the game?
Before the big release of the shooter, players were already able to form a judgment about the campaign of CoD MW3.
However, many in the community were simply disappointed. The reasons included a poor storyline and the short playtime of the campaign.
Since November 10, 2023, the full game has been available. But what is the mood now after the big release?
Here you can see a trailer that presented the first level of CoD MW3:
The community is still disappointed
Even after the zombie and multiplayer modes were added to the game, the mood in the community remains mostly negative.
On Steam, for example, CoD MW3 still scores largely negatively with 2,085 reviews, of which only 31% are positive (as of November 11, 2023)
In the comments on Steam, the campaign remains the main criticism of the players. CoD MW3 is simply too expensive, while the new game content feels more like a DLC rather than a standalone game.
The multiplayer mode in the game seems to be received somewhat better by the players than the campaign. Some users on Steam believe they like the multiplayer – but even then, the overall price is not justified.
Because: The multiplayer offers little new and feels somewhat like reheated game content from Modern Warfare 2. Similar sentiments are echoed by players on reddit.
Here we have gathered some player opinions on the multiplayer:
- “Earthquake” via Steam : ‘Don’t get me wrong. The multiplayer is fantastic. BUT the campaign was bad. Parts of the story made no sense, it felt most of the time like I was playing DMZ (though I really liked DMZ, I didn’t want it as a campaign). […] The only reason I am not refunding it is because I really like the multiplayer. Why does the game cost 70 dollars?!’
- u/CMDR_Soup via reddit: ‘Here is my review: The multiplayer is fun, but it should have been a free update. The campaign is shit.’
- Molested_Donut via Steam: This is MW 2 Remastered: ‘Multiplayer just copy. MW 2 multiplayer with new weapons and that’s it. How can you call it MW 3 and pay € for it! They’re making the same game every year and we buy it, so sad…’
Overall, the multiplayer seems to perform better than the campaign. However, that is not enough for players to see the price as justified, and the mood around the new CoD MW 3 remains rather negative – even after the full release.
Industry insider Jason Schreier spoke to employees from Sledgehammer Games and reveals what went wrong in the development of CoD MW 3.
It seems that a too short development time and crunch were to blame for the inadequate campaign:
