The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was released in October 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. One special feature: players on consoles can choose to play with mouse and keyboard. However, they will then compete against PC players or other console players with a mouse in hand.
Who is speaking? Developer Joe Cecot speaks in an interview with Tweaktown about the control options in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PS4 and Xbox One.
This is the announcement: Players can choose on PS4 and Xbox One
- whether they want to play against other console players when using a controller
- or whether they want to switch to mouse and keyboard and then compete against other players on PC or against users of mouse and keyboard on consoles
It is said: The use of mouse and keyboard will be supported in all modes of Modern Warfare: in single player and multiplayer, in the 2vs2 Gunfight mode or the 100-player mode Ground War.
Fair Play for All
This is the idea behind it: The aim is to prevent players from gaining a significant competitive advantage by being able to aim better with the sensitive mouse in first-person shooter games than console players.
Cecot says:
“One of the main ways we want to achieve this is by basing matchmaking on the input device. We also support various input devices. So if you want to plug a keyboard and a mouse into your PS4, you can do that.”
Controversial Topic Among Console Players
This is what it’s about: It is a controversial topic among console players who feel at a disadvantage when the opponent is using a mouse and keyboard. Some companies have been offering mouse and keyboard solutions designed for use on PS4 and Xbox One for a long time:
Modern Warfare follows the example of Fortnite and Epic Games: Anyone who wants to play with mouse and keyboard on consoles can do so – but they will also compete against other players using mouse and keyboard.
Problem: Emulator
What problems can arise here? The pioneer Fortnite faced difficulties with this system.
The problem in Fortnite was that players using certain emulators pretended to be playing with a controller, while they were actually using a mouse and keyboard. This gave them the advantage of both systems: they had aim assist and controller players as opponents, while they were using a mouse and keyboard.
Epic had to patch – the developer of the emulator released counter patches, causing unrest.
We’ll see how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare deals with this controversial topic.
