Prestige has been a staple of Call of Duty features for a long time. However, it seems that the new installment Call of Duty: Modern Warfare wants to change that and replace Prestige with a completely different system.
What is Prestige anyway? Most Call of Duty installments offer a level that players can increase in various multiplayer actions and games. These levels grant new weapons, attachments, and more.
Once a player reaches the maximum level, they can continue to play. They achieve “Prestige”. This resets their level back to 1 at the maximum level and they start all over again.
They can do this for several Prestige levels. Usually, “Prestige 10” is the highest attainable level.
What is the purpose of Prestige? Prestige rewards players with exclusive rewards like skins or badges that can only be obtained through this system. Especially hardcore players used Prestige as a kind of status symbol.
A higher Prestige rank means more invested time and for many players, “more experience” accordingly.
Season Ranks instead of Prestige
This is how Modern Warfare aims to replace Prestige: Leaker and YouTuber TheGamingRevolution has discovered a new system that is supposed to replace Prestige in Modern Warfare: seasonal ranks. These are supposed to work a bit differently than Prestige:
- After reaching the maximum level of 55, you start into the Season Ranks
- These ranks are tied to the seasons, of which he has found already 5
- A new season resets the rank, but not the levels
- A rank is expected to consist of 160 levels – this will still be determined
As the actual level of the players is not reset, weapons also no longer need to be permanently unlocked or released via tokens. That was previously the case because weapons were tied to levels, and Prestige reset this.
Once the maximum level is reached, all weapons in Modern Warfare will be available for each season. Instead, weapons can presumably be leveled up to a weapon level of 80.
How reliable is the leak? TheGamingRevolution is known for leaks that often turn out to be true. In the past, he predicted pitch-black maps in Modern Warfare. Shortly thereafter, the night mode was introduced in a trailer.
It is therefore quite possible that this leak will also prove to be correct in the end, and Prestige will be abolished. How hardcore players will measure themselves against each other remains to be seen.
