CoD Modern Warfare is said to offer a controversial campaign. The ESRB rating now reveals further disturbing content of the game.
How do you know about the content? The new details come from a rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board – also known as ESRB. This board rates video games based on their suitability for children and adolescents. However, the ESRB rating only applies to the USA and Canada.
CoD Modern Warfare has received a Mature rating. In the USA and Canada, only individuals aged 17 and older are allowed to play the new Call of Duty.
What kind of torture scenes? The rating includes some harsher content. For instance, there is said to be a torture scene in the game where a hostage is tortured by waterboarding. Players can also choose to execute a hostage during a dialogue. But that’s not all. In CoD Modern Warfare, you are said to threaten a family with a gun and witness a hostage exploding due to a suicide vest.
These are some of the reasons why the game is released only for those aged 17 and older. The rating “M” is nothing unusual in the USA and Canada. Games like Borderlands 3 and The Division 2 have also received this rating. Even the predecessor Call of Duty: WW2 is rated for ages 17 and older according to ESRB rating.

A Game Full of Controversies
This scene is also described in the rating: The already known child soldier mission is described in the ESRB rating. This mission allows the player to take on the role of a child and eliminate enemies. During this, you witness a gas attack where civilians and other children are killed. This has already sparked heated debates about the game.
Why the singleplayer will not be the only controversial part: The story campaign is said to not be the only mode displaying controversial content. The ESRB rating of Modern Warfare mentions that multiplayer badges are said to show images of marijuana.
Interestingly, a special multiplayer aspect is not mentioned in the evaluation – white phosphorus.
The game includes white phosphorus bombs as a killstreak in the multiplayer. This has also led to heated debates among players. These bombs were used in wars against enemies and civilians. Some players therefore find it inappropriate to implement the bombs as rewards in the game.
