In the beta of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, a player found a major hint about loot boxes. They have been present in all the games in the “Call of Duty” series in recent years, but have not yet been announced for the new Modern Warfare. Players feel they have caught Activision red-handed here.
Here’s the find: It’s about a tweet from shooter YouTuber LegacyKillah. He shared a screenshot from the Open Beta of Modern Warfare showing a “Supply Drop”, which is what loot boxes are called in Call of Duty. They appear on a “Post-Match” screen as a reward.
Originally, the image comes from YouTuber “NerosCinema”, but the tweet from LegacyKillah is now being discussed in the gaming community.
Accusation: First conceal loot boxes, then introduce them
This is his theory: LegacyKillah believes: Activision Blizzard is planning the same stunt as with Black Ops 4.
Activision Blizzard releases the game without loot boxes, waits until the reviews are written and millions of boxes are sold, and then introduces microtransactions and loot boxes:
- They achieve higher sales and better reviews than if they had started with the despised loot boxes at launch
- and still make a ton of money from microtransactions afterwards
In Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Activision was accused of having done exactly that. The YouTuber SkillUp subsequently retracted his positive review and accused the publisher of intentionally cheating by withholding microtransactions until the testers were finished with the game.

This is the current status regarding loot boxes in Modern Warfare: So far, there has been no talk of “Supply Drops”. Infinity Ward has neither confirmed nor denied them. It was only said that they will speak about it when they are ready to do so.
However, since they have been in all Call of Duties in recent years, everyone assumed that they would also return in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
“Secret” loot boxes not so secret
This is how it is being discussed: On reddit, there are three major trends:
- One opinion that many agree with is: “Everyone knows that microtransactions are coming – how else should they support the free content updates?”
- One finds it funny that Infinity Ward makes such a secret of it and then the loot box takes up a third of the screen.
- Overall, people find Activision Blizzard’s practice of “smuggling in” these loot boxes late to be dishonest.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is expected to be the giant hit of 2019 according to expert opinion. Currently, an Open Beta is running:
