In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare you can further decimate your opponents as a good player with killstreaks. The developers have now officially announced the killstreaks and provided some cool examples. However, not all fans are happy about it.
What are killstreaks? Killstreaks were rewards in previous CoD games that you could earn through kills. If you achieved a certain number of kills, you received a special reward, such as a bombardment or a reconnaissance drone, that provided you with advantages. This allowed good players to become even better and to earn special bonuses for their team.
However, if you die, you lose everything. The system rewards good players who rack up kills without dying themselves.
Heavy Armor, Phosphorus, and Tanks
What can be earned with the killstreaks? In a tweet, the developers mentioned alongside the mere announcement of the killstreaks also three examples that can be earned:
- Juggernaut Assault Gear: A massive body armor that protects you from gunfire
- Infantry Assault Vehicle: A light armored personnel carrier with a .50 caliber machine gun
- White Phosphorus: An incendiary bomb dropped from the air that obscures the area and ignites opponents
Is that all there is? According to data leaks, there should be many more killstreaks, including a nuke that kills all players and ends the game. However, only the streaks mentioned here have been officially confirmed so far.
What is special about killstreaks? The latest games in the series had scorestreaks instead of killstreaks or pointstreaks. This is basically the same, except here you could earn points for achieving mission objectives and support in multiplayer for the streak, not just for kills. Modern Warfare is thus deliberately taking a step back. But is that a good idea?
How are the killstreaks received by players? On Twitter and Reddit, fans are currently vigorously discussing whether killstreaks are such a good idea now. Proponents say that in a shooter, kills are simply the most fun and should also be rewarded. Anything else would diminish the FPS experience. One user sums up this opinion succinctly on Reddit:
“Killstreaks require that you have the skill to get kills without dying. This requires precision, target acquisition, map knowledge, spawn knowledge, and positioning.
People who want scorestreaks are terrible at all the things I mentioned above. They think being present is everything and they want streaks for sitting in a bright area and waiting for a display to fill up.”
Many on Reddit in various threads disagree with that:
- “I prefer scorestreaks simply because you get rewarded for completing objectives.”
- “[Killstreaks are] not better, they encourage selfish gameplay and ignoring mission objectives for simple kills.”
- “You all must be blinded by nostalgia!”
- “This is a strange decision. I understand they want to make it like the old CoDs and differentiate from the other parts of the franchise. But that was changed for a good reason. Scorestreaks encourage objective-oriented play. Killstreaks do the opposite. Of all the ways to make CoD 2019 more like the old games, this is probably the one no one asked for.”
- “Scorestreaks were a good change back then. I think they’re changing it back because of nostalgia.”
