The new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has already removed a cool feature before release – the so-called Buddy Boost. But why? And what exactly was this feature? The developers from Infinity Ward revealed this in an interview.
This is the feature: The release of Modern Warfare 2019 is approaching, and more and more features like the Gunsmith or the dynamic start sequences for multiplayer matches are becoming known.
The 2019 Modern Warfare reboot was almost given a Buddy Boost feature. This involved an interaction between two players to reach elevated positions and otherwise inaccessible areas of a map.
One player crouches. A second operator uses this crouching comrade as a pedestal and climbs up – essentially a human ladder. However, this feature did not make it into the final game.
It was ultimately removed by the developers, even though it had been in the game for more than a year.
It is too difficult to get random players to cooperate
Why was the feature removed? What sounds really cool in theory turned out to be difficult to implement in practice. In the end, it wasn’t possible to trust that players would cooperate with each other accordingly.
According to Multiplayer Map Design Director Jeffrey Smith, it’s really hard to get a random person to cooperate with you.
You would have to climb over someone and also rely on them to pull you up. Players simply wouldn’t cooperate often enough for it to be worthwhile in the end.
Especially since the crouching player had to remain in a disadvantageous position while being easily taken out by opponents. There were just too many question marks regarding the required teamwork.
This is how Modern Warfare was adjusted after the removal of the human ladder: However, the absence of the Buddy Boost feature contributed something good to Modern Warfare. Because of the failure of this idea, a different one emerged.
The development team loved that players could reach places on maps that remained inaccessible without the human ladder. Once this feature was removed, they decided to make the maps much more interactive and accessible, turning them into a kind of immersive playground with more possibilities than before.
Do you want to try Modern Warfare 2019 before its release? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be released on October 25, 2019. However, there will be a beta phase in September where you can get your own impression of the upcoming shooter. What do you think about the human ladder feature? Would you have liked to see it in the game, or was it the right decision to remove this system?
