The Battle Royale of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is highly anticipated, but there are no really official details. Here you will find leaks, rumors, and everything important about “Warzone”.
The rumor mill is buzzing, and there are a lot of half-truths and leaks circulating about the possible Battle Royale mode of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
We have looked at the information and divided the most important parts into 4 categories:
- Release date and free-to-play
- Size and content of the map
- Elements of core gameplay
- Additional gameplay elements
However, keep in mind that this is unconfirmed information and it could turn out very differently in the end.
Leak says: Release could be imminent, possibly even free-to-play
When could Warzone be released? The new Battle Royale could come as soon as February 18.
Update 18.02. 19:05 Uhr – The Battle Royale did not go live today. A newer leak suggests a release on March 10.
Update 21.02. 9:00 Uhr: What appeared to be a bug might have been a hint at the Warzone release. March 3 is currently also looking likely.
Update: 26.02. 14:30 Uhr: There are further hints pointing to a release on March 3. Whether there is any truth to this remains speculation.
The well-known “Modern Warfare” leaker “TheGamingRevolution” recently released an English video, in which he interprets information from a data miner and therefore expects the release on February 18.
How certain is this? “TheGamingRevolution” has hit the mark with his predictions before, and his new info on when the “Battle Royale” mode could start sounds plausible. But nothing is certain.
When could the mode otherwise be released? Currently, a release during Season 2 seems highly likely. The video that played at the start of Season 2 shows very clear images of large battles, vehicles, and parachutists descending from an AC-130 onto the battlefield.
The new operator “Ghost” mentions that soldiers are fighting each other in Verdansk and asks Captain Price for his best men. This cinematic has been the most conclusive evidence so far for many players and the Battle Royale is thus considered almost confirmed.
Could the mode be free-to-play? “TheGamingEvolution” claimed this as well. The corresponding tweet has since been deleted, but Eurogamer reported on the possibility that “Warzone” could also be available to players who have not purchased Modern Warfare.
Now an American magazine has also reported on a possible F2P release. According to the magazine’s sources, “Warzone” could continue to develop as a stand-alone, independent of Modern Warfare, and become the third pillar of the franchise alongside the annual CoD premium version and CoD Mobile.
Map could be significantly larger than “Blackout”
How large could the map be compared to Blackout? The MW leak account on Twitter “@WarzoneModern” published a picture that shows the size of the Blackout map for comparison.
Blackout is the Battle Royale mode of CoD from 2018, Black Ops 4. However, there is no indication of zombies, as in the predecessor, so far.
What could happen on the map? It looks like the battlefield could be filled with popular maps from previous CoD titles. Current MP-levels are also included in the supposed BR map, even the entire “Ground War” map “Port of Verdansk”.
With a little trick, you can explore the possible map of the Battle Royale yourself. To do this, you need to start a private game and “fly” over Verdansk in the “CoD-Caster Mode”. This is possible on the new map “Atlas Superstore” and the “Season 1” map “Vacant”.
Spec Ops players will likely already know several sections of the map. Many of the missions take place in the area of Verdansk and its surroundings. In a reddit post by “Kalinine” further details can be seen.
200 players, plunder, and other possible gameplay details
As with all other points, none of the info has been confirmed so far. However, there are various signs for the assumptions. Here are a few key points on how the BR of Modern Warfare might work.
- 200 players – Findings from data miners and leaked ads suggest up to 200 players in a match. Whoever remains at the end wins.
- Starting weapons – It is possible to start matches where players have a weapon immediately after landing. Whether this becomes the norm in public matches is uncertain.
- Squad size – There have already been hints of solo, duo, trios, and you can probably also go out as a squad of four. Whether these are all standard sizes or linked to events remains unclear.
- Revival – Players can be revived for a limited time. If you’re down and have a pistol, you can try to shoot another soldier and then get back up.
- Drop by airplane – Apparently, in MW, you go into battle by airplane. However, other types of entry (convoy, helicopter) have also been found in the files. Whether these are intended for standard games remains to be seen.
- Radioactive ash as a boundary – The play area will shrink, and you take damage if you’re outside. In Modern Warfare, you will likely be enclosed by contaminated ash.
- Perk system – There seems to be a lot of abilities that support you during the round, such as dexterity for faster reloading. However, how perks are acquired by players is not yet known.
- Plunder as currency – You can presumably collect plunder through missions and kills, with which you can acquire weapons and equipment. This seems to run through supply drops that you request.
- Respawn Gulag – You can probably bring fallen teammates back into play with respawn tokens at certain locations on the map. However, they will still have to prove themselves in a 1vs1 match in the Gulag to return. “Self-revive tokens” have also been found.
- Looting – There is equipment, weapons, attachments, and more to be found. Weapons can come in different variants, with or without pre-installed attachments, and can be modified. Inventory space is said to be limited.
The user “DougDagnabbit” has compiled code entries and leaks and published them on reddit in a thread in English. The information comes from his compilation.
Jumpmaster, Killstreaks, and what else Warzone might bring
In addition to core gameplay, the leaked files show many smaller elements that could be part of Warzone. This info also comes from the reddit post by “DougDagnabbit”.
- Loadout boxes – You set your favorite loadout before the start and can request it during the round via supply drop with plunder.
- Jumpmaster – A team member determines the drop point for the whole team.
- Mission system – The team can earn plunder through missions and acquire better equipment with it.
- Plunder bank – Above a certain amount, you can extract plunder and earn XP. Whether this also brings other bonuses is currently unclear.
- Special drop kits – There could be role drop kits that provide various equipment items (Medic, Tank, Hunter, etc.).
- New weapons – The weapons Intervention (sniper), Honey Badger (assault rifle), Spas 12 (shotgun), Glock 17 (handgun) were found in the files.
- Killstreaks – You can deploy killstreak rewards during the round. Whether you can loot these, buy them with plunder, or unlock them through kill streaks remains unknown.
- Rarity of items – Weapons can appear in various rarities and are correspondingly modified. Rarer weapons then offer good attachments. (Source: Table on reddit)

How much of it is true, what might be intended only for events, and what ultimately comes into the game, we will likely only see with the actual release. And that has not yet been officially announced.
