Players who have access to the beta of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will have access to a wide selection of weapons. However, most of these are locked, and players are wondering how to unlock the weapons this time. We at MeinMMO have the answer for you.
What has changed in MW2 regarding weapon unlocking? Call of Duty has always had a fairly simple system for how players can unlock their weapons.
For this, you only needed to level up your account. This happens whenever you complete matches and gather as many XP as possible through kills or similar achievements. This way, you level up your account and automatically unlock weapons at the respective level tiers.
In Modern Warfare 2, however, it is no longer quite the same.
The gunsmith has almost completely abandoned your account level. You can unlock many weapons regardless of your level in the so-called platforms. We will show you how this works in the beta and what you need to do for it in the following section.

Unlocking weapons in the beta – Here’s how
What are platforms? To better understand the new system, you need to know what platforms are. In the beta, there are two platforms:
- The Lachmann Meer platform
- The M4 platform
These platforms encompass a collection of weapons that players can overview in the “Progress” menu of a selected weapon in the gunsmith.
To access other weapon models in the series, you need to level up these platforms step by step. You start in the “M4 platform” with the M4 and can then unlock the FTAC Recon and the 556 Icarus upon reaching the required weapon level.
The Icarus and the Recon can also be leveled up, offering new attachments and unlocking other weapons again. Once you have unlocked the weapons here, they can be selected in the weapon selection as usual – but not before.
In the weapon selection, you will see the platform that a weapon belongs to at the top left under the weapon’s name. The beta also features weapons that do not belong to any platform.
The base weapons of the individual platforms can still be unlocked via the account level. The Lachmann platform is available at beta rank 16.
Select your newly acquired rifles and repeat the XP gathering. This way, you can gradually unlock new guns. Essentially, you are forced to equip and fight with even unpopular weapons. Only by doing so can you complete your weapon collection.
This is how you unlock all known weapons in the beta. If you don’t have access to the Lachmann, we have just the right trick for you to include it in your gear anyway.
