Call of Duty: Mobile was released on October 1, 2019, and officially celebrates its first birthday today, October 15, 2020, with a massive update. The mobile shooter has performed really well in the past. MeinMMO looks back and shows what has happened over the year.
This is the state of CoD Mobile: The shooter was the most successful mobile game of all time upon its release. The success continues to this day, with ratings for the game on Android and iOS still being strong:
- 4.7 out of 5 stars in the Apple App Store based on 62,370 reviews
- 4.5 out of 5 stars in the Google Play Store based on 11,150,021 reviews
That such a good rating can be maintained despite such a number of opinions speaks for itself. Already in July, we reported on MeinMMO that CoD Mobile could record over 250 million downloads.
Now, in October, according to the press release, there are even 300 million. What brings so many players to play the mobile shooter so extensively?

Moreover, CoD Mobile has taken one of the popular features from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone: The Gunsmith. It has been available since Season 9 and allows you to customize and modify your weapons with various attachments.
If you want to play but either have no smartphone or prefer the PC, you can play CoD Mobile on PC with an emulator. To keep it fair, though, you will only be matched with other PC players in lobbies.
Praise and criticism from players
What is well received? The positives most frequently mentioned by players are the gameplay, the fair design of the payment model, and the graphics. CoD Mobile is one of our mobile games with the best graphics.
The user The Tschoni is excited in the App Store about “how well it has succeeded in making a tactically challenging shooter” where it is not just about “shooting everything down”. The currency is fair, which many fail to achieve. “Keep it up!”
What is criticized? With the extent that CoD Mobile now offers, bugs are nearly unavoidable. These are also the biggest point of criticism that keeps coming up. There are issues with hit detection or point registration in matches.
Additionally, some users complain that CoD Mobile either cannot be started at all or does not function on their device after an update. However, criticism is generally limited.
New content for the 1st birthday
This is what is coming: For its birthday, CoD Mobile received its largest content package to date, the “Anniversary Update”, today, October 15. This brings:
- the new Battle Royale map Alcatraz from the Blackout mode of Black Ops 4
- the “Club”, a new social space where players can meet and play mini-games
- a new Battle Pass, maps, weapons, and characters as well as events throughout the month
Among the new maps is the “King” map, which players from Modern Warfare will surely recognize from their firefights.
Is it worth getting into? Along with the update and the birthday celebration, CoD Mobile has entered Season 11. In our announcement for the new season, we explain to you why it’s worth getting into for newcomers right now. CoD Mobile is free for iOS and Android devices.
The development of CoD Mobile will surely continue for a while. The success at release, which has been maintained until now, as well as the effort put into further development, are good indicators for this. Additionally, publisher Activision Blizzard sees a great opportunity in mobile gaming, where they are just getting started.
