Today, on October 20th, the beta of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ends. MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus has played it extensively and quickly focused on a specific weapon setup. Here he shows you what he used to really dominate.
What kind of setup is this? To really score in the beta of Black Ops Cold War, I chose the MP5 as my weapon, a submachine gun and one of my favorite weapons from previous games. Since Cold War allows for shotguns to be used as a secondary weapon, I quickly opted for the Gallo SA12 – also known as SPAS.
The same combination was already used by Frizzeyes, who set the kill world record in the beta. Together with the right perks, these two weapons make a really strong “Run and Gun” build.
That the beta was extended to today was quite convenient for me as I was able to score quite a bit yesterday. In most matches, I had a positive K/D, often around 2.0 or more, and I won most rounds at the top of the scoreboard.
How do I build the weapons? Cold War has a gunsmith, similar to Modern Warfare. There you can customize the weapons with different attachments.
For the MP5 you need:
- Muzzle: Muzzle Brake 9
- Body: Steady Hand Laser
- Underbarrel: Field Agent Grip
- Magazine: 40 Round Speed Mag
- Stock: No Stock
The setup roughly resembles the short version of the weapon, the MP5k. This one can already be constructed as a “secret weapon” in Modern Warfare.
For the Gallo SA12 you need:
- Muzzle: Duckbill Choke
- Barrel: 21.4″ Paratrooper
- Body: SWAT 5mw Laser Sight
- Magazine: STANAG 12 Round Tube
- Grip: Guardian Grip
“Run&Gun” – The optimal build for speed junkies
What kind of build is this? The build is aimed at players who like to move quickly on the map and flank opponents. You rarely stand still and are constantly on the move to the next kill. This build is not suitable for snipers or players with a slower playstyle. You play this build similar to the ultimate Run&Gun build from Modern Warfare.
How do I build the loadout for the weapons?
- Primary Weapon: MP5
- Secondary Weapon: Gallo SA12
- Tactical Equipment: Stun
- Primary Equipment: Fragmentation Grenade
- Field Upgrade: Any (for me: Proximity Mine)
- Perks: Flak Jacket, Tracker or Assassin, Gung-Ho or Ninja, a perk particularly appreciated by professionals
- Wildcard: Daredevil
What makes the build so good: With the attachments on the MP5, you are already so accurate while firing from the hip that you don’t even need to aim to hit. With Gung-Ho, you can fire directly from sprinting and even while sliding, you remain extremely precise.
The MP5 is suitable for both close combat and mid-range encounters this way. With the larger magazine, you can take on assault rifles. Together with Tracker, you can hunt down and track enemies, and the vest prevents you from being surprised by explosives and grenades.
The Gallo SA12 is possibly the strongest weapon for the secondary slot. The semi-automatic shotgun can fire rapidly and usually, opponents should be dead after the second shot. With the attachments, it becomes even more dangerous in close combat, with high spread and good handling. If you find yourself surprised by many opponents, in tight corridors, or if the MP5 is empty, you can easily clean up with the pump.
An important part of the build is also the Stun. It heals you when you’ve just narrowly escaped a firefight and can prevent the kill on you. It is especially important in fights against multiple opponents.
Tips for the Run&Gun build for Cold War
How do I play this build correctly? Your task in the team is to flank the enemies, overwhelm them and eliminate enemy campers. Find a path past the enemy line and fire at them from behind.
As you are faster with the MP5 than most other players, you can avoid many dangers and simply hunt enemies. With Tracker, you know when enemies are nearby and can stick to their tails.
Thanks to the versatility of the build, you can play it in any game mode. Just don’t try to camp with it. If you stand still, you are an easy target and at the mercy of many other weapons like assault rifles and sniper rifles.

Will it work at launch? Those who like to play faster builds and want to pump adrenaline through their enemies’ veins can definitely play this or a similar build at the launch of Cold War. At least, as long as the weapons are not significantly nerfed. Cold War is set to release on November 13.
Currently, Cold War has a problem with cheaters, even though the game isn’t even out yet. Against them, you have little chance even with the strongest build. Let’s hope that it gets sorted out by the release.
