The new Season 3 of Call of Duty starts on Thursday, April 22. The CoD makers have now released a roadmap, showcasing upcoming content for Black Ops Cold War and gave a small insight into the changes in Battle Royale Warzone. MeinMMO shows you the roadmap and provides information about it.
Update April 21: You can now download the update for Cold War, and there are already changes in the game. However, the new content for Season 3 will go live tomorrow morning at 6 AM.
Some players also report that they can start a pre-load for update 1.36 of Warzone. However, the reports are still sporadic, and it may be that it doesn’t work for you yet.
Season 2 is slowly but surely coming to an end. The expired season will likely not be remembered fondly by many players – too little content for Cold War, too little action for Warzone.
Now Call of Duty has released the roadmap for Season 3, and already at the start of the new, free content cycle, there seems to be more to see than in the entire last season:
- Warzone event and map update
- 2 new 6v6 maps for Cold War
- Killstreak for Cold War
- New battle pass with two weapons
- New vehicles and a new map for Outbreak
- Field upgrade for zombies
- Fresh prestige rewards
MeinMMO shows you the information about the update on Thursday, the announced content for the season start, and an overview of what else will come during the season. In our season hub, you will also find leaks and rumors about season 3.
Call of Duty: Update and Season Start on April 22
When does the new season start? In the CoD blog about the update (via callofduty.com), the developers explain that the new season officially starts on April 22. However, the updates for the new season will go live earlier:
- Cold War: Season update on April 21 at 06:00 AM
- Warzone: Season update on April 22 at 06:00 AM
Meanwhile, the “Cold War” update is available and already makes some changes in the game – for example, the weapon balance. However, you cannot play the new maps and modes just yet. They will go live tomorrow morning.
How big are the updates? At the season start, there are relatively large updates for both CoDs:
- Cold War update size Season 3
- PlayStation 5: 12.3 GB
- PlayStation 4: 8.1 GB
- Xbox Series X / S: 11.6 GB
- Xbox One: 8.3 GB
- PC: 13.1 GB
- Warzone update size Season 3
- PlayStation 5: 25.6 GB
- PlayStation 4: 25.6 GB
- Xbox Series X / Xbox Series S: 25.9 GB

CoD Warzone: Season 3 – Content at Launch
What happens in Warzone at the season start? With the roadmap, the developers have now finally confirmed what many players and leakers have long suspected: Something is happening on the big map Verdansk. However, expectations need to be tempered a bit. Instead of a completely new map, there will likely just be a “Warzone map update”.
A big leak showed snippets from a past Verdansk a few weeks ago. The map may be reverted to the time of “Cold War” and thus receive a facelift. An “update” of the map suggests that certain areas will remain the same, while others will be changed. However, details are not yet officially known.
At the season start, an event called – Hunt for Adler will also go live. During the event, there will be challenges for Cold War and Warzone, where you can secure special cosmetics for both games. If you complete all tasks, there is a special skin for Adler.
How the map changes will come into the game, whether the Adler event has anything to do with it, and what will happen with the zombies is still unclear.
However, this appears to run as a live event, bringing together the current story events in Warzone and the map update. Back then, data miners found the audio files of an unknown mode or event. An initial date for the event is April 21 at 9 PM our time. Call of Duty showed a mini-teaser on Twitter about it.
However, the CoD makers followed up and showed further dates on Twitter:
- First entry
- April 21 from 21:00 to 23:00
- Second entry
- April 21 – 22 from 23:00 to 06:00
- Third entry
- April 22 from 06:00 to 21:00
- Fourth entry
- April 22 from 21:00 to 22:00
Whether the entries are multiple dates for the same event, like during the reveal of Cold War in Warzone, is currently unknown. Back then, you could experience the presentation of the first trailer of Cold War in the Battle Royale, and the event was online at different times over several days.
Leaks about the Warzone event, however, suggest that it is a multi-part event. You may experience the end of the zombie story of the current Verdansk in the first stage, and the other events will already take place in the new version of the city. However, this cannot be said for sure at the moment.
CoD Cold War: Season 3 – Content at Launch
What happens in Cold War at the season start? With Season 2, players of the multiplayer were only served small bites, and during the season there were only 2 new 6v6 maps. In the new season, it looks different, and you will be served two fresh maps at the start. However, Outbreak also gets an upgrade, and there will be a new scorestreak:
- Yamantau – 6v6 map: Yamantau is a mountain in the Ural Mountains and was the setting for a campaign mission
- Diesel – 6v6/2v2/3v3 map: A rather small map with a gas station in the center
- Sticks & Stones – mode: Well-known party mode with fixed loadout. In an earlier version, players only had a crossbow, the ballistic knife, and tomahawks
- Strafe Run – scorestreak: Medium streak that starts an airstrike on a target
- Outbreak expansions: The “Duga” map will be part of Outbreak. There will also be new tasks, new vehicles, and world events where you can get wonder weapons
- Toxic Growth – field upgrade for zombies: Undead can be halted and slowed down with this
During the season, at least one more 6v6 map (the classic Standoff) will also come, and the Duga map will also be available for the Fireteam mode. Additionally, the developers announced a kind of battle royale for Fireteam – “Multi-Team Elimination”. Although there are respawns, they should be heavily limited. Moreover, you cannot take your entire loadout into the match. The last team standing with four people wins the match.
However, there is currently no new information about a new map for the zombie mode and the introduction of Easter eggs in Outbreak.
Season 3: Weapons, Battle Pass, Prestige Update
What content do both CoDs share? Warzone and Cold War are connected, and as a result, there is content that is relevant in both CoDs.
There is again a new battle pass that brings cosmetic content and two new weapons for both games. Over 100 levels, you can acquire many items that are purely aesthetic. In addition, there are two new weapons:
- Sniper rifle: Swiss K31
- Submachine gun: PPSH-41
In the release week, the ballistic knife is also expected to come to Cold War. The melee weapon allows you to shoot blades around. For Warzone, the knife is planned for mid-season. Overall, the developers announced 6 new weapons for the entire season.
Additionally, two new operators will enter the game at launch. “Wraith” is visible on the roadmap, and she is joined by an old friend: Captain Price. The legendary operator from Modern Warfare is now also coming to Black Ops Cold War – in a somewhat younger version.
Furthermore, there is again an update of the prestige system. Your season rank will be reset, and you can acquire 4 new prestige emblems. With each prestige level, you will receive a prestige key, a tier skip for the battle pass, and additional challenges. After the first 50 levels, there is also a weapon blueprint.
The roadmap for Season 3 is packed and caters to fans of both Warzone and Cold War’s multiplayer mode alike. Only the zombie mode gets relatively less new content compared to the start of Season 2. Back then, there was the Outbreak mode and, thus, a completely fresh experience.
The first in-game preparations for the new season are already underway. Warzone nerfed the OP pistol Sykov, which caused a stir in the battle royale for a few days.
