In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War cheaters and hackers were already present during the beta. This led many console players to disable crossplay. Read here at MeinMMO how serious it already is.
What happened in the beta? The new Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War had its first beta behind it on PC and Xbox One. But alongside exciting and fun shooting – for which there was even a beta extension – there was also considerable frustration. Because although the game was only available in beta for a few days, cheaters and hackers were already able to exploit the game at will.
A particularly egregious example of unrestrained cheater behavior can be found here in a clip from reddit. There, a cheater is so blatantly misusing an aimbot that there is really no doubt left about his cheating. He mows down opponents one after another and hits nearly every shot, regardless of distance.
The MOST blatant and ridiculous aim hack I’ve EVER seen in a video game ? from r/blackopscoldwar
This is particularly crazy because the beta offers no progress you could take over. So cheating isn’t even sustainably beneficial. Rather, it seems that cheaters just want to have fun, scoring top scores without skill.
Xbox players frustratedly disable crossplay
Here’s how players are reacting: Since cheaters are mainly active on PC – the infrastructure here supports modifications to games much more – Xbox players took matters into their own hands and disabled the otherwise positive crossplay feature.
This allowed console players to play together with PC players – actually a great thing that guaranteed full lobbies. But without PC players, there were also far fewer cheaters in the lobbies, so the feature soon became an annoyance and was disabled more often, as reported by Eurogamer.
Some comments from players on this:
- RoKeOps: “I prefer waiting a long time for a lobby than to deal with these hacker assholes who couldn’t win a real game without hacking.”
- Illini_Jack: “The first thing I did yesterday was turn off cross-play”
- Killminster001: “They should have the option to exclude PC players and leave crossplay for consoles.”
One can only hope that the developers at Treyarch will refine the anti-cheater measures before the release of Cold War, thus preventing it from becoming a fest for cheaters at launch. In any case, this player managed to play without cheaters. He still set the record for 145 kills in the Cold War beta.
