The ongoing Season 1 of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War received a mid-season update on Thursday, January 14, bringing new content to the game. MeinMMO presents the patch notes for the update.
What is the mid-season update about? Through the seasons, Cold War and Warzone are continuously supplied with fresh content. The biggest content drops traditionally occur via updates at the start and in the middle of a season. Now the so-called mid-season update for the current Season 1 is live.
When exactly does the mid-season update come? The first joint season of CoD Cold War and Warzone started on December 16, and was refreshed on Thursday, January 14, 2021, by the mid-season update – simultaneously on all platforms (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, as well as PC) at 7 PM German time, the new content arrived.
Mid-Season Update brings a bit of everything to Cold War
Through Twitter, the developers at Treyarch share which content is newly available in Cold War with the update. There is a little bit of everything:
- Multiplayer map: Sanatorium
- Multiplayer mode: Dropkick
- Zombie mode: Cranked
- Map & Intels for Zombie Rush
- New weapon: Wakizashi sword
- One week free Zombie mode
What’s new for traditional multiplayer
New map “Sanatorium” for the Fireteam mode: With Sanatorium comes a massive new map for the large 40-player Fireteam mode. There, you fight at the foot of the Ural Mountains around the namesake Sanatorium U23 – a state-run Soviet rehabilitation institution, where apparently experiments for Project “Golova” for mind control were conducted. You will have various land, water, and aerial vehicles at your disposal.
By the way, numerous other images of the new map have already been leaked; here you can take a first look: New map in CoD Cold War is huge – First images show the dimensions
New mode “Drop Kick 6vs6”: In this mode, 2 teams fiercely fight over a briefcase containing launch codes for an atomic bomb. Once secured, the corresponding team must defend the briefcase and its holder, as that’s how they score points. The other team must eliminate it and reclaim the briefcase. If a team reaches the point limit, the command to detonate the atomic weapon is executed, and the round is won.
What’s new for zombies
New mode “Cranked”: Here, it’s not just against the undead, but also against the clock, making the zombie experience a whole lot faster. Every kill resets a timer. If it runs out, you explode. So, tactical action or resting isn’t possible.
PlayStation exclusive: Players on PS4 and PS5 exclusively get the map “Raid” in the Onslaught playlist with new Dark Aether intel to discover.
New map: Although not directly with this update, at the beginning of February the mode will receive the new map Firebase Z.
Free zombies weekend: From January 14 to January 21, the zombie mode of Black Ops Cold War can be tried for free.

A new weapon – The Wakizashi sword
Lastly, there’s a new weapon that you can use in Cold War & Warzone – the Wakizashi sword. To unlock the blade, you need to secure at least 2 finishing moves with the combat knife in 10 different matches.
New content for the ongoing Season 1 announced
The mid-season update also received a roadmap showing the new content and giving an outlook on what else to expect in Season 1:
Included are, among other things, ranked play, a new zombie map, and another map for multiplayer.
What about Warzone?
No new content was announced for the battle royale Warzone, and the mid-season update only included a playlist update. The roadmap also shows nothing in that direction.
You can use the Wakizashi sword in Warzone, but otherwise, there are no major changes in CoD-BR. However, there was already a small update that nerfed the OP weapons again, including the DMR 14 and Diamatti akimbo pistols.
