Activision confirmed on May 23 that the upcoming Call of Duty in 2024 will continue the “Black Ops” series. According to rumors, this year’s installment of the shooter is set to be controversial. What rumors are there and what is truly known?
What is officially known so far? The name. The upcoming CoD is called “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6”. Players tend to use the abbreviation BO.

- On June 9, 2024, more details about BO6 will be revealed. After the major Microsoft Showcase, there will be a separate CoD presentation (Xbox via x.com).

Saddam Hussein and 9/11 – Rumors about Black Ops 6
There are already some leaks about Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. These involve the setting, Saddam Hussein, and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. We summarize the leaks and rumors that are currently known, but please note that these are not official or confirmed information. These are just leaks that could turn out to be false or only partially true.
What rumors are there? The oldest rumor about Black Ops 6 concerns the setting: according to some leaks, the shooter is said to take place during the Gulf War (via Insider-Gaming).
One of the key figures in the game is said to be Saddam Hussein, who was an Iraqi politician during the first and second Gulf War. The assumption that Saddam Hussein will play a role in Black Ops 6 is based on the YouTube thumbnail of the trailer being released on May 28. The thumbnail is already visible on YouTube and was also shared on x.com.
In the thumbnail, there is a man that some users believe to be Hussein.
Here you can see the thumbnail on x.com:
The numbers in the thumbnail are actually coordinates in decimal degree format. If you enter these coordinates in Google Maps, you will reach the al-Faw Palace in Baghdad (Iraq), which Hussein had built in the 1990s.
However, the leakers and rumor chefs are not in agreement about what role Hussein will have in the game. The politician will apparently be an antagonist but not the main antagonist of the game (via x.com).
In addition to Saddam Hussein, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, are also said to be addressed in the game (via x.com). However, the leaker posted only a snippet of the teaser image released with Activision’s announcement of the game title (via callofduty.com):
In the logo, some numbers can be seen above the head of the left wolf, including the numbers “0091 2001”.
How the leaker connects this to 09/11/2001 is, however, unclear.
- The empty space could contain a “1”, resulting in 09112001. In the American date format, the month is written first and the day second (MM.DD.YYYY). So it could be hiding the date 09.11.2001 (German: 11.09.2021).
- After the number 2001, there is a slash (/). We do not see what comes after the slash. So it could be that the leaker knows what comes after the slash.
That the attacks of September 11 and Saddam Hussein play a role in Black Ops 6 is also shown by another leak on x.com. It states that the campaign will cover two real military operations: “Operation Iraqi Freedom” and “Operation Enduring Freedom”.
- Operation Iraqi Freedom refers to the Iraq War, which began on March 20, 2003, when U.S. forces launched airstrikes on Saddam Hussein’s presidential palace and other military targets, subsequently deploying over 67,000 troops in Iraq (via history.navy.mil)
- Operation Enduring Freedom was a large-scale military operation initiated in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks to combat terrorism (via history.navy.mil)
Black Ops 3 could hence address some real events and operations if the leaks turn out to be accurate.
The current Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is still in its third season, but Activision has already released the roadmap for the upcoming one.
