What is Second Extinction about? The story is not the focus of the game and serves more as a framework for the co-op shooter. Humanity has been driven from our Earth to space by mutated dinos and now lives in space stations.
In Second Extinction, the goal is to return home and defeat the enemy. Players are sent in groups as guerrilla teams back to Earth. As a player, you are part of these groups and must work together against the mutant dinos.

With Guns and Gadgets Against Mutant Dinos
This is what the game contains: In groups of up to 3 players, you complete missions and side missions on a large map. You must complete certain tasks and reclaim areas from the dinosaurs.
- There are 11 weapons with 5 upgrades each
- 5 heroes with unique abilities
- 6 missions with additional side missions
- A large map with multiple regions
- 11 dino variants
You can choose a mission, complete it with your friends, and after finishing it, you need to try to get out of the trouble somehow. If you succeed, you can buy new weapons and upgrade your existing gear.
These are your enemies: In the game, you will face numerous dino variants. While they correspond to the known species, they differ significantly from their counterparts due to their mutations. The following species are available in the game:
- Raptor
- Acid Raptor
- Alpha Raptor
- Electro Raptor
- The Digger (a raptor that can dig)
- The Bull (a kind of Triceratops)
- Armored Bull (armored)
- The Rex
- The Flatback (Ankylosaurus)
- Necro Flatback
- The Watcher (a small dino spy)
- Further dino variants are to follow.

The results of your matches also affect the other players, even if you do not see them. This is enabled by the “War Effort” feature.
Your Victory Affects the Community
This is how the feature works: Whether you win or lose affects the entire situation in Second Extinction. For example, if an area remains under dinosaur control for a long time, it becomes more dangerous.
The level of threat in a region depends on how successful a certain number of players are in completing missions there. The dinos do not remain inactive and can reclaim the areas if not enough players succeed in the regions.
The interim score is evaluated every week. If an area has been lost, there is a severe outbreak event.
What is happening now in Second Extinction? Recently, Pre-Season 5 has started. It brings among other things a new weapon and a new dino variant into the game. There is also a roadmap with further plans: steampowered.com

Can you also play Second Extinction alone? The developers explicitly state that it was designed as a co-op game. Lone wolves will find it harder.
However, it is possible in a kind of expedition mode to explore the map on your own.
On which platforms can you play the shooter? Second Extinction had its full release on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One back in October 2020. The game is also available on Xbox Game Pass.
The game has also been released on PC but is still in early access. Progress can be carried over to the main game once the full release occurs, although there is no date set for that yet.
