Countless roguelites are sprouting up every week on Steam, but not all are worth playing. Roboquest is one of the better games and, besides its Borderlands-inspired look, offers incredibly good gameplay reminiscent of Doom.
Roboquest was in Early Access for a time and finally released as version 1.0 on November 7. The game offers shooter and roguelite fans a lot:
- Cel-shading graphics reminiscent of Borderlands
- Many different weapons
- Boomer shooter gameplay like Doom
- 6 classes with different playstyles
- hidden secrets that can be discovered in every run
At first glance, Roboquest looks like the roguelite shooter Gunfire Reborn, but at its core, it offers a different shooting experience.
Precise, heavy, and above all, fun gameplay
Roboquest’s fast gameplay is inspired by games like Doom. You have rocket jumps, rails to slide on, and a solid level design that rewards good movement. It’s fast but always feels precise and heavy.
In a run, you can find random weapons and perks that fit the current build. The weapons feel different and require a different playstyle depending on the build. Aggressive play is even rewarded, as you can collect more healing items. If you stay back and try to snipe enemies, you may be safer, but it’s harder to heal if you get hit.
Therefore, mastering movement in the game is crucial.
The 6 different classes all have a unique playstyle that can be specified while leveling up in a run. Whether a thick tank or a sniper with many critical hits, many playstyles are possible. By combining the different weapons, which you should continuously switch during the run due to weapon stats, rarely will two runs feel the same.
The difficulty can be adjusted as desired. The game is really tough, but after each run, you learn a bit more and get mechanically better at the game. The cherry on top is that you can play the game co-op with a friend.
It is a fun rogue-like shooter
The Steam community is also thrilled with the game. Out of 8,179 reviews, 95% are positive. (As of: 15.12.2023)
