Meanwhile, players from Destiny 2 have had ample time to look at the new subclass Strand on paper with all options. While the Hunter and Warlock are absolutely satisfied with their new abilities, the Titan sits in the corner sulking. His criticism is absolutely justified, as Bungie once again only trusts him with the brutal brawler in Lightfall.
What are Titans criticizing? With the new subclass Strand, great new abilities will come into play for all three classes in Destiny 2. Just not for Titans. Those who hoped for innovation and a more elegant super with enormous penetrative power were disappointed. The message for the sturdiest class remains: “Titans like to hit things.”
- The Hunter receives outstanding movement with Lightfall and becomes the master of deadly grace. In all the trailers, he dances thrillingly but unscathed through the enemy lines with his Strand Widow’s Silk.
- The Warlock is a telekinetic sorcerer with Strand, manipulating the fabric of reality and even able to shape creatures that obey his orders.
- The Titan, however, does what he always does. He receives two blades instead of fists with Strand, with which he can perform light and heavy attacks.
In the subclass trailer for Strand, you can see the Titan smashing to fulfill his role:
Titans do not want the Bud Spencer role: Despite the new subclass, not much changes for Titans. Even with Stasis, the last subclass added to Destiny 2, the Titan was out there with his fists, brutally shattering ice crystals. With Strand, the new task seems very similar and many Titans do not like that.
On Reddit, a big discussion has sparked about the fundamental class identity of the Titan. Especially because Kevin Yanes, the design lead at Bungie, mentioned in an interview about Strand that Titans are “the fist on the cover of the game”.
With Blade Fury, it is more about giving you the survival tools to really attack those guys and then giving you an option for range, which is usually not done with these roaming Supers to hang things from a distance and deal damage. That is their heavy attack, this “dual blade uppercut” that you see in the trailer. I think those are two of the most important ways we have tried to shift them. But yes, Titan main fighters, we love you. We do. But don’t forget that we are trying to enhance your core fantasy. And at some point, [your class] holds the fist on the cover of the game.
Kevin Yanes explains the purpose of a Titan in a Q&A interview
Bungie wants you to smash: Apparently, Bungie’s vision of the Titan is a wild, untamed force in the game. He is supposed to deliberately resolve every encounter using the most violent methods possible.
In this style, the Titan class is supposed to be suitably expanded in future seasons of Lightfall. And that does not please some Titans, as they want to be more than just the rough brawler who beats everyone up in their own sci-fi fantasy of the Destiny universe.
This is how Hawksw0rd describes the situation with fitting words on Destiny Reddit:
- “Bungie, you have described Titans as powerful beings who stride across the battlefield and are confident that they are the hardest thing that is not classified as an orbital platform. And if you give them the power to change the fundamental foundations of reality, do you think we will want to hit more often? I want to like Strand, but I don’t play Titan to hit things.”
And Piemarai adds:
As a Titan main, I now feel that they are forcing us to look like we are compensating for something!

Other Titans have no problem with it, like JMaccleBot. He says bluntly: “Shut [your mouth] and smash. You’re wrong, it’s fun!”
This is what Bungie says about the Titans’ identity crisis
The Titans’ desire not to want another roaming super is a valid criticism. And Bungie has now reacted to their complaints.
They tried to calm the wounded Titans via Twitter. They understood the Titans’ wishes and ensured during development that the Strand Titan, despite its smash mentality, will also provide new gameplay possibilities. So it should also feel “fresh” compared to previous subclasses in Lightfall.
But Titans can really find out on February 28, 2023, when the new DLC Lightfall launches. If you want all the information about it, you can find it in our Lightfall hub:

What is your opinion? Do you feel degraded to a “smash class” with your Titan due to Strand? Or do you play your Titan precisely for that reason? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
