What are attributes? After each level-up of a character, you receive 3 points in Clair Obscur that you can distribute across different stats.
There are a total of 5 attributes:
- Vitality: Increases your health points to withstand more damage
- Strength: Increases your damage to defeat enemies faster
- Agility: Increases your speed so you can act sooner
- Defense: Makes your character tougher so you take less damage from enemies
- Luck: Increases the critical hit rate, with critical hits dealing an additional 50% damage

Best distributing attribute points
It is worthwhile to take a close look at each character to see which points should be invested there. MeinMMO lists the characters individually for this reason.
Gustave: Agility and Luck
Gustave works with overloading. To do this, he needs to hit several times in advance, in order to then deal gigantic damage. To get Gustave to his powerful hit faster, it is essential that he acts quickly.
Since several hits are necessary to maximize the overloaded ability, it can also be worthwhile to invest in luck. This will make his individual hits even stronger.
Lune: Defense and Vitality
Lune is a sorceress who can unleash powerful attacks by cleverly combining elements. But sorcerers are known in many RPGs to be extremely fragile. To withstand enemy hits, it is necessary to invest in defense and vitality.
Since she can also take on the role of a healer, you should try to keep her alive at all times. If you want to push her attack a bit more, agility is another option for spending points wisely. Her element combinations take several turns, and she can set up with her fire attacks for Maelle.
Maelle: Strength and Luck
Maelle is one of the best damage dealers in the game. She specializes mainly in attacking single targets, making her an important character in boss fights. Therefore, Maelle’s damage should be as high as possible.
To further increase the damage, you should spend Maelle’s points on strength and luck. If you do not depend on other characters to induce altered status effects for Maelle to switch her stance, you can also invest in agility.
Sciel: Strength and Luck
Sciel behaves like Maelle. She is one of the strongest damage dealers due to her twilight status and should therefore allocate her points entirely to strength and luck. Which attribute you prioritize is a matter of taste. With multi-hit attacks, luck could be advantageous here.
If you have points left, you can occasionally invest in agility. This way, Sciel can reach her twilight status faster.
Verso: Agility and Vitality
Verso’s technique relies on being able to parry and evade well. Therefore, you should not waste thoughts on defense. Instead, focus on vitality, as Verso has some abilities that weaken him or sacrifice his health points.
Additionally, you should invest in agility. This allows Verso to quickly rank up from D to S, achieving a high damage output. As Verso is also among the strongest damage dealers, you can also invest in strength and luck aside from that.
Monoco: Anything is possible
Monoco is the most versatile character in Clair Obscure. He can learn attacks by defeating opponents for the first time. This gives him access to many more skills than all other characters. You determine how his wheel turns during combat and which skills are then available to him.

To distribute them, you need to stop at an expedition flag and select the “Increase attributes” option there. The flags are distributed at regular intervals across levels. Alternatively, you can use the flag in your camp to distribute the points. You can visit the camp on the large overview map that you are on when moving between levels.
The choice of weapon for attributes
Each weapon scales with up to 2 attributes. Each attribute has a letter on the weapon that determines how much higher the weapon’s damage will be. D is the lowest factor, and S is the highest (D<C<B<A<S).
Additionally, this affects how points you invest in one attribute can slightly increase other attributes. The higher the rank of the weapon for an attribute, the stronger the effect. So make sure that your weapon scales with the values for which you have spent points on a character.
Reset attributes
If you made a mistake, that’s not a problem. There is a way to completely reset your attributes. For this, you need the item “Overpaint.” You can obtain the item from vendors for 10,000 Chroma, hidden in levels, or by defeating enemies.
So you have a few options to acquire the item. However, do not be too wasteful with them and save some copies for the endgame when you have clearly defined your group roles.
To reset your points, you must go to the overview of a character’s status values. Below the status values, it will indicate which key you need to press to reset the points. Each reset requires one Overpaint.
