Many people may not know the MMO Civilization Online, and that will not change as it is being shut down at the beginning of December.
It has not even been a year since the sandbox MMO Civilization Online launched in Korea. In December 2015, the gates opened, and on December 7, 2016, they will close again. However, the development studio has further plans for the franchise and wants to develop a reboot that is supposed to offer better gameplay.
An MMO in the Civilization Universe
Civilization Online represents a mix of strategy and MMORPG. Unlike the main series, the sixth installment of which was released on October 21, you don’t play as a leader of one of the nations in Civ Online. You are a hero and must fight your way up to become the ruler to ultimately guide the history of your nation. To do this, you explore the vast game world, gather resources to craft, and must also fight against your enemies. It is possible to team up with other players to advance your faction together.
Interesting Gameplay Concept, Yet No Success
During your adventures, you progress through different eras such as antiquity, the Middle Ages, and modern times, witnessing how the world and technology around you change. Civilization Online did not resonate well with players. Since it was not successful in Korea, it was never released in Europe and the USA. How this will affect the planned reboot remains uncertain. What exactly will be different and whether there are plans to release the game outside of Korea is currently still open.
Those who like Civilization will have to forgo Civ Online. Instead, it’s worth picking up Civilization 6, which, despite the comic graphics, offers the familiar strategy gameplay.
