A development team in Korea is working on Civilization Online, a quirky genre mix of MMO, sandbox, and strategy game. The game has reached the modern era and is nearing its release.
It is not technically an MMO, as there will be new rounds again and whether it will ever come to the West is still up in the air. But we can’t help but stare at Civilization Online from time to time and begrudgingly admit: It has something.

Produced by XLGames, the makers of ArcheAge, Civilization Online is not an “online version of the strategy game”; rather, players take on the role of a “worker or warrior”, playing in service to their empire and advancing through centuries and eras into the modern age.
As can be seen in the trailer, the development stage of Civ Online has now reached modernity. And yes, as every Civ expert knows, that means: atomic bombs.
A final closed beta phase is set to start in Korea on July 14. The game’s release is expected shortly thereafter. There will also be a server outside of Korea, in Taiwan.
