In an interview, Christian Bale expressed his dissatisfaction with his portrayal of Batman in the “The Dark Knight” films. One of the reasons was his fellow actor Heath Ledger, who he felt surpassed him with his role as the Joker.
Christian Bale played the role of the Dark Knight and thus the lead role in the “The Dark Knight” trilogy.
Although the film is celebrated by fans and was long considered the best superhero film of all time, the actor expressed in an interview with Yahoo in March 2016 that he was dissatisfied with his performance.

“He is so much more interesting than I am”
Christian Bale told Yahoo that he did not deliver the performance he had originally hoped for in the films. He also felt that he was not quite hitting the mark with his portrayal of Batman.
Especially when his fellow actor Heath Ledger († January 2008) joined the cast as the villain Joker in the second film of the trilogy, the lead actor felt that he would be overshadowed by his colleague:
“Heath showed up and threw all my plans out the window. Because I thought: ‘He is so much more interesting than I am and what I am doing.'”

In another interview with GQ, Christian Bale emphasized that he felt no resentment towards his colleague. Instead, he had only kind words for Heath Ledger.
He was not only a great actor who was fully dedicated to his role but also a good person, with whom he had a lot of fun on set.

Even though Christian Bale looks back on the films with mixed feelings, he was grateful for the opportunity to play one of the most famous comic heroes of all time, as he told Variety in an interview in December 2017:
“[…] It changed everything. It was the first time I made a film of this magnitude. That was a real learning curve for me. I wrestled with it for a long time. Occasionally I still do. But I am learning to accept the good things.”
