Chris Evans initially resisted the lead role in Captain America. However, his co-star Robert Downey Jr. was ultimately able to convince him to take on the iconic character in the MCU.
Chris Evans portrayed one of the most important characters in the MCU as Steve Rogers aka Captain America in three solo films as well as four Avengers films.
However, the actor had significant concerns at the beginning about playing the Marvel hero, leading him to decline the role multiple times.
But with the help of MCU colleague Robert Downey Jr., he ultimately made “the best decision” of his life.

Chris Evans turned down the offer out of fear
He received invitations from Marvel multiple times to audition for the role of Captain America. But each time, the actor declined, believing he had made the right decision:
“I had said no a few times and woke up feeling good about it. I stand by my opinion,” he thought. (via eonline.com)
Why did Chris Evans turn down the offer? Chris Evans was experiencing significant anxiety at the time, even to the point of panic attacks.
He was intimidated by the thought of gaining significant fame and its potential impact on his private life and doubted his acting career.

However, Marvel approached the actor again and offered him directly the role of Captain America this time. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, gave the actor a weekend to think about the offer.
Following this, Chris Evans spoke with his therapist, family, and a fellow actor: Robert Downey Jr., who was already part of the MCU as Iron Man.
Since both actors had the same agent, Robert Downey Jr. called Chris Evans to discuss the role offer. It helped a lot, as the actor recounted:
[…] And just to hear how he [Robert Downey Jr.] gave me a little push, I felt a bit more like part of the group and not so intimidated.
I think it was a double-edged sword: On one hand, you feel welcome, but on the other hand, you think: “Oh man, I have to stand next to this guy? He’s amazing in this role. I don’t want to be the weak link here.”
But it was very comforting to hear that he was on my side.

After gathering the opinions of his confidants, he accepted the role offer this time and became Captain America in the MCU.
In hindsight, Chris Evans was glad that he accepted the role, as CNN reported:
“It was the best decision I ever made.” He especially credited Kevin Feige for his role in the MCU, as he had remained persistent despite multiple rejections from the actor. He saved him from a massive mistake.
He added: “To be honest, all the things I feared never really happened.”
